Garlic, a natural food to prevent gallstones

April 24th 2007 11:07
If you happen to find yourself having sharp pain under the rib cage and you are sure you did not do anything causing injury to yourself during exercise or daily activities, you could have acquired gallstone symptoms. Chinese herbal doctors believe that eating garlic can prevent such diesease.

Our gallbladder's normal function is to store bile produced by the liver, and to aid in the digestion and absorption of fats in the duodenum. Medical people believe that when the bile secreted from the liver contains excessive cholesterol, bilirubin, or not enough bile salts, then in turn it may harden to "stones" .

There are 2 types of gallstones. One is cholesterol stones and pigment stones. These stones can be as small as sand and as big as a golf ball. Once they block the ducts causing too much digestive enzime accumulates around the pancreas, sharp pain may occur.

One of th effective way to prevent the formation of gallstones, according to some herbal doctors suggestion, is to take in more garlic in you daily meals. They explains that other than rich of Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Sulphur, Selenium, Manganese, garlic has one component named allicin which is capable of stopping cells from taking up cholesterol. This substance can reduce cholesterol in the liver and helps to excretes fatty acids. This in turn lower the chance of formation of gall bladder stones.

They suggest that taking a daily dose of between 600mg and 900mg of garlic powder supplements will help to reduce your cholesterol which will result in limiting the chances of gallstones formation. My suggestion is, before you decide to take the supplements, please consult you doctor to make sure if that is suitable to you health condition.
