Futurisim: To Infinity and Beyond?

March 15th 2007 14:58
So, as anyone who followed last year's Spring Ready To Wear (RTW) shows around the world will know, there seems to be a new fash-battle in the works: Futurism vs the New Romantics. I'm going to look at each of them individually, starting with Futurism.

When we talk Futurism, we're really talking about Balenciaga and to a lesser extent Alexander McQueen and Dolce. It's more minimalistic and androgynous than previous futurisim attempts, and although I like the overall silhouette (the skinny-leg pant, winged shoulers) the fabrics are foul. Seriously all that PVC is going to chafe horribly. And there are really only so many things you can do with black rubber.

The Good:
The Silhouette, as I said before, it's daring, structured and modern. This (along with metallics) will have the biggest influence on High Street.
Metallics. Not like they've been out of fashion in the past 3 years, but we're seeing a return to high sheen silvers and gold.
The Shiny Skinny-Leg Pants Hot, hot, hot. Satin, skinny leg tux suits will be everywhere this season.
And look, I have to give Nicholas props for those freaking weird C3P0 leggings. Don't you just love what designers can get away with?

The Bad:
Lack of Depth. The collection really didn't go anywhere. It made it's big impact statement and then just repeated it with different leggings throughout the show.
The Goggles I HATE THEM! Get back to the Chem labs for christ's sake!
Footwear Actually, accessories in general. Talk about an afterthought.
Fabrics My big issue with Futurisim and where I think the New Romantics dominate. The choices are limited, rigid and just plain boring. They don't inspire me, they just make me think how awkward the model looks walking down the runway taped to a big piece of frikkin rubber!

Picture time!

THOSE leggings

Shiny Skinny-Leg Pants. They're here to stay

Love the silhouette

Stay tuned for The New Romantics and then The Verdict.
Also, I'll discuss Stella McCartney's new range for Target.

Note: I will be discussing Fall 07 soon, but as Australia is a season behind, I started with spring.

Til next time,
