FROM THE SMALL SCREEN TO THE BIG SCREEN: 24, LOST & PRISON BREAK

What this three TV series have in common is that they have either being nominated for or won multiple awards. Thanks to their worldwide popularity, movies based on the series are a possibility.
24’s story takes place in real time with each episodes portraying one hour. Because of its structure, I never thought that there would actually be a movie for two reasons:
- The series feels like a 24 hours long movie;
- It’s structured in real time
It seems like I was wrong. 24: Redemption (used to be 24: Exile) is a two hours long movie and a prequel to Season 7 – So, if you’re a fan, you don’t want to miss it -. It was shot in South Africa and Los Angeles. FOX will air it before Season 7 on November 23rd. The two hours long movie will be in real time format like the series. It is said that it will be presented in a manner that will enable people who haven’t watched the series to enjoy the movie. It will also include some of the cast of Season 7 and, for the first time on the series, a female president.
Plot: “24: Redemption takes place between Season 6 and 7. On they day of the Presidential Inauguration, Jack Bauer finds himself in the midst of a bloody uprising in the small African nation of Sangala. He must risk his life to transport a group or orphans to the American Embassy and sacrifice his own freedom to ensure that they are evacuated out of the country and make it safely to America.”
It’s not clear if the series will end with season 8 (2010) but Kiefer Surtherland – who’s divorce was finalized on May 2008, so ladies, feel free to try your luck – was quoted multiple times saying that he would like for Jack Bauer to die at the end. I think that would be a great way to end a heroic career.
Another TV series which people believed was going to be turned into a movie is Lost. In 2006, there were a lot of rumors about a Lost Movie. One of it’s co- creators, Damon Lindelof, told PR Inside "We'd love to end the show after four year, five years tops and do a movie."
A few days ago, J.J. Abrams (co-creator and executive producer) was interviewed by MTV. According to them: “He [J.J. Abrams] still believes a theatrical leap is doubtful, he’s now less against the idea than in the past. And that’s mostly because there’s now a firm end-point for the series: May 2010.” It looks like the idea for a Lost Movie has been dropped. It’s probably for the best.
A series which I’d love to see turn into a movie is Prison Break. So far, there are no words of a movie but a spin off. According to The Hollywood Reporter: “October 24, 2007 Fox is looking to expand its primetime prison population with a spinoff from "Prison Break." Cherry Hill, the potential new series would be set at a women's prison and center on Molly, a new regular character that will be introduced on Prison later this season. Fox has ordered a script of the possible spinoff, which is being written by "Prison" exec producer Matt Olmstead and co-exec producer Zack Estrin and produced by 20th Century Fox TV.” I hope that it will be just as intriguing as Prison Break.
