I find it hard to believe that anyone who watched the Quail Hollow Championship this weekend didn't come away extremely impressed with this year's champion, Rory McIlroy. The guy came into the final round on Sunday a far cry from the leaders, and went nuts. He shot an incredible 62 to take the tournament by 4 shots over Masters champion Phil Mickelson. The guy can't even legally take a drink to celebrate his win until Tuesday! But more than the 62, more than the win, more than the incredible birdie putt on the 18th hole to all but wrap it up, I was impressed by this guy's attitude and demeanor. He means business, no doubt about it. But if he mishits a shot, you don't hear 6 expletives. You see that same big smile. And when walking up to the 18th green on Sunday, he was the one who was applauding. Sure, the fans were goiung crazy for him. But he dedided to take off his hat, and show the fans how much he appreciated their support. When was the last time you saw a guy applaud tha crowd? I truly hope he becomes my generation's Tiger Woods; minus the rants, curses, threats to camera men, and multiple affairs. Stay grounded Rory, you have a lot more golf tournaments to win, and even more fans to impress for all the right reasons.
I am not a Texas Longhorn fan. I am not a Cleveland Browns fan. But I must admit that I am a huge Colt McCoy fan. And I can't help but think that the Browns stole Colt McCoy in the 3rd round of the 2010 NFL Draft with the 85th overall pick. This guy was a beast at Texas. He completed over 70% of his passes over his 4-year career in a competitive Big 12. His junior year, he completed an astonishing 77.6% of his throws. Obviously, he is accurate. He also has great playmaking ability with his legs. Most of all, this guy is an absolute winner. He won 45 games in Austin. No, that is not a misprint, he won 45 games! Most college players don't even play in 45 games throughout a college career. This is exactly what the Browns need. It has been entirely too long since the Browns have had a quarterback who has a history of winning big games. Brady Quinn had ridiculous numbers at Notre Dame, but he was never able to win the big game. McCoy was huge in big games at Texas, and one could easily argue that Texas would have won the national championship last year if Alabama hadn't knocked him out of the game on Texas' second offenseive series. However, the biggest reason why I think this guy will succeed in Cleveland is the fact that he's a solid guy. He is grounded in his Christian faith, and realizes the importance of life outside of football. The fans in Cleveland can (and will) be brutal, but I think Colt will be able to rely on his faith to get through tough times in the Dog Pound. When faced with the reality of just having missed the national championship game in January, this guy really impressed me with his post-game interview.
He will undoubtedly face more adversity than a simple shoulder injury during his stay in Cleveland, but if we learned anything from the past, I believe Colt will have a solid career in the NFL. I applaud this draft pick by the Browns, now Cleveland fans will have a star other than Lebron to root for.
