People have become so cool, they're now uncool. And apparently if you throw a trusty pair of reading glasses before heading out, you've arrived at cool town.
No longer is the typical hot guy/girl the apple of everyone's eye now. Now it's the weird nerdy ones that are seen as the 'true' essence of cool. (And before you get ahead of yourself, no Star Trek and 'computer parties' are still not cool, we've got a while to go before that ever happens buddy).
I just read in a fav mag of mine that it prides itself on being different from other magazines because it, 'picks out girls that used to be geeks and are now the girls who really understand fashion.' That's not cool. I wasn't a geek and now I'm being excluded from the cool train.
Geekiness is the in thing; girls totally dig the geek. Ha, yeah no. When at school did the hot chick date the complete looser who was crap at sport and had no friends? What a chick magnet - Those magazine articles telling you so are lies, all lies.
It's like those movies when the class geek or loser gets a make over and shock horror they've been totally hot all along, they only needed a hair cut and a change of clothes for us to realise this. Wow very realistic. Now chicks will be keeping an eye out for the nerds to show any glimpse of hotness under the Clearasil, coke bottle glasses, puffer and fandangle laptop 2000.
Like DJ's (a.k.a. Disc Jockeys) are cool regardless of their music/DJing capabilities. So what they can use a computer now I should idolise them? Basically.
Dude come on I type in 'How to be a DJ' into Google and at least 27000 results are thrown back at me. I'm totally sweet, I'll be DJing in the hippest venue in no time. (Ok I think anything remotely cool automatically becomes redundant when the word 'hippest' is mentioned alongside it. Am I right? Am I right?).
I ventured to a gig over the weekend, and these guys were so positively uncool they oozed it. 'I don't care what I wear, so if I like the look of a 1982 floral silk bomber jacket I'm going to wear it.'
However I'm not too sure about those lemon coloured stockings though. Lemon has a tendency to make you look as though you suffering from a severe case of jaundice. Hold the phone she's a geek, it doesn't matter she can pull it off.
People are beginning to realise uncool is cool, and cool is now uncool. The more you don't try the cooler you are, and the more you try the bigger looser you are. So now people are hit up with the big task of trying to look cool, without actually looking like they give a damn. It's a hard task, and almost certainly destined for failure.
Come on, make up, scarves, jewellery, nail polish, a new hair do and your trying to tell me you don't care about your appearance? You just happened to find those new $300 jeans in the trash you say? Sweetie I didn't come down in the last shower, pull the other one.
My offensive, self-righteous brother ridiculed me (again) regarding my idea of 'cool' the other day, apparently it differed to his. He offered me this advice - "Who is cool? Some try hard who wears a tea towel and stands around with skinny-legged jeans. Coolness is defined by actions, not appearance. Anyone who thinks they are cooler than everyone else cannot be cool, by definition. Pretentiousness is the opposite of cool."
I suppose ideally he is right, and I am a bad person for caring about what is cool. Should I be offended by the fact I'm wearing a tea towel scarf and skinny-legged jeans right at this moment? So what now I'm the opposite of cool? I'll never win.
