Friends in high places

If I was younger when I discovered politics I might have wanted to try to be a candidate in one of the polical parties. One of the conservate Australian parties no doubt.
I actually don't recall knowing anyone who was a politican, and it wasn't until my children had almost finished school that I really came face to face with a politican and had the confidence to tell him what I really thought.
I was on night duty at the time, and he woke me by ringing the door bell and I was a bit surprised to see the local state politican at the front door. When I told him I was a nurse, he proudly told me how he was on the board of the hospital at which I worked. I let fly with some information that he obviously did not know - about the white ants eating away the doorways, and a range of other things that really put him on the back foot.
As it turns out later, I became quite friendly with him, as my husband and I had decided to not sit back and accept everything. We would play a small role in our local branch of one of the major parties.
It was extra ordinary! What a bunch of wankers - I use that word in the way that they tried to impress us with their superiority and snobby behaviour. We worked in the branch for a while, but moved house, so pulled out of the political scene for a while.
though at that time I had some dealings with a number of politicans in my work and I was pretty incensed at the behaviour of both of them. One in the end, did take time to understand my concerns, and I have always felt that I had played a role in having a law changed.
