The tomato plants in my garden have began to bloom so I know it won't be long until I can enjoy the distinctive flavor of fried green tomatoes. This is a very simple and budget friendly dish to prepare. The tart and tangy taste of fried green tomatoes will compliment any meal.
FRIED GREEN TOMATOES
3 green tomatoes
1 cup or so of flour
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
salt to taste
cooking oil for frying
Wash and dry the green tomatoes. Slice the tomato into 1/4 inch slices.
Whisk the egg and milk until blended.
Dip the green tomato slices into the egg mixture, then dredge in the flour.
Pour cooking oil into a skillet. You want to have about an inch in depth. Put the skillet on medium heat, until cooking oil is hot.
Place the flour coated green tomato slices into your hot oil. Fry about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until the flesh of the tomato has turned a yellow green color and the coating is golden brown.
Drain on paper towels, salt lightly and enjoy!
