FRIDAY THE 13TH – THE DATE AND THE MOVIE

February 19th 2009 20:23
First I would like to start by apologizing for the late posting. I had some trouble with the connection over the weekend, and no, I don’t believe that it had anything to do with the date.

Friday the 13th is considered as a day of bad luck and the reason/source is still unclear. Despite the stories and superstitions surrounding the date, it never stopped studios when it came to releasing movies on that date.

First, let’s take a look at the past two Friday 13th box office performance:

July 2007, Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix: The fifth movie of the Harry Potter series earned 77 million dollars on opening day, received mainly positive reviews then went on to earn 292 million dollars in gross revenue. Since it’s a movie with magic, wizards, sorcerers and spells, we can say that it managed to turn the bad luck into good luck to have the date work on its favor.

June 2008, The incredible Hulk: Since the movie Hulk (2003) wasn’t received so well, Marvel Studios decided to make a new one to help keep the franchise alive. You’d think that would be enough reason to choose a different opening weekend. The movie earned 55 millions on opening day (6 millions less than Hulk), received more positive review than its predecessor and earned 134 million dollars in gross revenue (2 millions more than Hulk). For a reboot, I think that it should have done a lot better.

This year’s movie had “bad luck” written all over it. Title: Friday the 13; Opening Day: Friday the 13; Time Main Events Take Place: Friday the 13.

I was sure that people would avoid it till the following weekend. Surprisingly, it ranked first on opening weekend but with 45 millions and lots of negative reviews. I wonder if it would have earned more if it had opened on a different day. Let’s hope that it will do a lot better this weekend.

The thing about this Friday the 13 is that it came just before a very popular and romantic occasion: Valentine’s Day. I don’t know of it’s because of Friday the 13 (date) or Friday the 13 (movie), but movies with romance didn’t have such a strong opening. The strongest one was He’s Just Not That Into You which ranked 2nd with 23 million dollars.

Anyway, it’s not too early to get ready for August 2010; just in case.
