YES!

Many times when you apply for a writing position with a blog or web-zine you'll be asked for writing samples. Sometimes, even after submitting a writing sample, you'll be asked to furnish a "test article" so that the editors/content managers can be sure that your writing style matches the "voice" of their site.

Some newer writers tend to dislike the idea of submitting a new piece of work that they won't be paid for, but it's necessary to keep your eye on the goal. Do you want to land a job that pays you consistently or not?

The small amount of time and energy spent writing an article or blog post for the editors to review will pay off immensely if you are chosen to write a column regularly as a freelance contributor.

Remember, you are a business. You need to invest just like any other business would when starting out. It may take you months or even a year to start earning money that will allow you to live the type of life every freelancer desires, but it will take much longer if you are unwilling to make investments that don't require an immediate pay-out.

I hope this article helps you!

Best Wishes,

Marcus

Okay, so here's how I grew my own business.

First, I applied to several pay up front content sites. Demand Media Studios was the main one I used. This is important for the new freelancer mainly because this will serve as your "instant gratification". You receive a set amount of money for each article that you complete and is accepted by the site. You lose all rights to the work, however you earn generally anywhere between $8 - $20 per article that you write. With Demand Media Studios, I generally earned anywhere between $15 - $45 an hour, depending on the amount of articles that I was able to find and the availability of online sources for my content. This was my "bread-and-butter" for a long time.

Second, I applied to SEVERAL revenue share content sites. A revenue share site will pay you over time for the articles that you've posted to their webpages. You won't usually start receiving a large payout from these sites until you have a significant number of articles that are listed on their site and until your articles "mature" or become well ranked in the search engine rankings. Time and commitment are the keys to this method of earning an income.

Third, set up a YouTube account. Hopefully you're not shy about making videos. If you are, there are ways around that. For every blog post or revenue share article you make on an important topic try to make a corresponding YouTube video. Then link the article to the video. You'll get more site visits (which translates into more revenue share) and eventually you'll have enough videos and hopefully YouTube subscribers to become a YouTube Partner. Once you're a partner you'll start making residual income from advertising placed on your videos! You'll have two streams of residual income: one from the articles and one from the videos.

Like I said earlier, this is just the basics. Hopefully you'll now have some ideas on what steps you need to take in order to start a successful freelance career.

...Everyone!

I know it seems unlikely that people would be able to build a successful self-run, one person, business out of nothing but it can happen.

I work five days a week usually. I get up, go to a cafe and work for a few hours writing web content. Then I focus on my YouTube channel. Next, I complete ghostwriting assignments and projects from clientele that I procured. Then I'm done.

That's it. No hassle, no fuss, pure benefit. I can work from anywhere in the world that I have an internet connection. I'm free.

Trust me, everyone can do this, it's not a special club I belong to. You just have to know where to start.
