For the last time I am not Turkish! Turks do not speak Arabic and the Arabs are white....

September 5th 2007 02:18

........ They are not olive or black!
It is crazy how the stereotypes are incrusted in the mind of people in some countries. Still I don't get it we are in Australia, aren't there enough people from Libanon and other Arab countries?
If you speak arabic or if you say you are a muslim, they look at you you are white and you can be from anywhere, what do they ask you? "So you are from Turkey?" or " You are Turkish are you?".... Well no, I AM NOT! I am French. So your parents are Turkish?
I am sure this post will not break the stereotypes but it may reach some people.

The Turks are muslims but not Arabs, it is like the Iranian; therefore they do not speak Arabic.
Why? Just because they have their own language.... Would you assume that the christians speak the same language or worse "latin"? no? So it is the same here.
Then after investigation I found out that they think I am Turkish because of the color of my skin: white. If I was an arab it seems that I should be olive, dark, tanned , black..... etc. Well big news people, the Arabs are not (in the big majority at least).
With all the coverage around the middle east maybe we should know better? Or just because we are supposed to have so much informations today that our knowledge should be better than our parents. Is it? Not sure.....
I hope if you see an indian you don't ask him/her which country of the Middle East he is from?
Anyway, next time if you are in a similar situation simply ask where people are from instead of just assuming from a strange false stereotype.
It gets irritating when you encounter the same stereotype over and over and over again!
A small reminder too they could be Arab but Christians and please don't ask "how come" or "No it's not true" as I heard so many times, remember where Jesus come from?

Yes that's right somewhere in the Middle East I think......

Haven't been asked that, no. Have been told to "go home Osama...we don't want your kind here".

To which I replied, "what? intelligent?"

Then I got called a "smartmouth bitch".

To which I replied, "No I'm a Hindu Indian."

Then I got accused of being racist.

Sheesh.

Thing is...I'm an English born, India and Pacific bred, Australian schooled, SE Asia lived, Australian citizen.

I don't know where I'm from so...can't expect anyone else to know!
