A blog about football, for football fans. Not a mention of the word 'soccer'!

About Me
For as long as I can remember, and certainly for the last 20 years, I've been a fan of the beautiful game. I have counted down the days to the start of the football season; I have bought hundreds of pounds worth of newspapers so that I can review the league tables, and read about the transfer speculation; and I've geekishly (no, it's not a real word) written down the scores of the last 7 seasons in hardback books. I LOVE this sport, and feel I should be sharing my love with the world.

Carling Cup 1st Round

August 10th 2011 09:16
Carling Cup results from last night (excluding the ties of Bristol City v Swindon Town, Crystal Palace v Crawley Town, Charlton Athletic v Reading and West Ham United v Aldershot that were all called off due to riots).

What a night for shocks, with no fewer than 5 Championship sides knocked out by League Two opposition on their own grounds.

Accrington Stanley 0-2 Scunthorpe United

Barnsley 0-2 Morecambe (Carlton and Ellison strikes secure a fantastic away win for Morecambe, playing a side two divisions above)

Bournemouth 5-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
Brighton and Hove Albion 1-0 Gillingham

Burnley 6-3 Burton Albion (Four goals from Rodriguez, including two penalties, help Burnley to a 6-3 victory in a thrilling match at Turf Moor. Despite there being 9 goals, it was goalless until Rodriguez opened the scoring from the spot on 57 minutes. Two goals in the final 5 minutes of normal time brought Burton level from 3-1 down, before extra time produced 3 more goals for the home side and a comfortable route to round two)

Bury 3-1 Coventry City
Cheltenham Town 1-4 Milton Keynes Dons FC

Derby County 2-3 Shrewsbury Town (Championship side Derby knocked out following home defeat by League Two Shrewsbury, with form Ram, Lionel Ainsworth setting up all 3 goals against his former club).

Doncaster Rovers 3-0 Tranmere Rovers
Exeter City 2-0 Yeovil Town
Hartlepool United 1-1 Sheffield United (4-5 on pens))
Hereford United 1-0 Brentford

Hull City 0-2 Macclesfield Town (A brace from Sinclair gave League Two Macclesfield a memorable win over ex-Premier League side, Hull City in the shock of the round)

Ipswich Town 1-2 Northampton Town (Championship side Ipswich allow Northampton of League Two to come from behind to defeat them in Round One)

Leeds United 3-2 Bradford City (one of the few cities remarkably untouched by rioting, Leeds United win a local derby against Bradford City)

Nottingham Forest 3-3 Notts County (4-3 on pens) (Arguably the tie of the round, with a 6-goal derby thriller, culminating in a penalty shoot out late into the evening. Edwards of County gave the visitors the lead on 16 minutes, before a Lewis McGugan free kick 14 minutes later drew the homeside level. Forest took the lead in the second half through a Findley strike on 56 before Craig Westcarr made it 2-2 (76 mins). In to Extra Time and County take the lead on 98 minutes through former bad boy, Lee Hughes, but with seconds left on the clock and a famous away scalp almost in the bag, Forest tie the match with an unstoppable Wes Morgan strike! And in the penalty shoot out, County succumb to a 4-3 defeat, with Lee Hughes missing the vital penalty..)

Oldham Athletic 1-1 Carlisle United(2-4 on pens)
Plymouth Argyle 0-1 Millwall

Portsmouth 0-1 Barnet (League Two's the Bees, defeated Pompey at Fratton Park, through a Mark Hughes strike, sending the Championship side crashing out on their own patch)

Port Vale 2-4 Huddersfield Town
Preston North End 3-2 Crewe Alexandra
Rochdale 3-2 Chesterfield
Rotherham United 1-4 Leicester City
(A hatrick from Schlupp give the Foxes a good, strong win away from home against Rotherham)

Southampton 4-1 Torquay United(Southampton followed their impressive 3-1 league victory over Leeds with a plundering win over Torquay United, debutant De Ridder giving the Saints a 16th minute lead. Less than a minute later and the League Two side were level, with Mansell equalising. A free-kick from Lambert and goals from Richard Chaplow and Jonathan Forte gave the South Coast side a passage into Round Two.)

Southend United 1-1 Leyton Orient(3-4 on pens)
Stevenage Football Club 3-4 Peterborough United
Walsall 0-3 Middlesbrough
Wycombe Wanderers 3-3 Colchester United (5-4 on pens)

West Ham United 0-1 Cardiff City

Goalless at half time in a thrilling match in which the home side dominated for long periods of the game, a great strike on the turn from Kenny Miller that eeked through the hands of the sprawling Robert Green gave the Bluebirds a precious 1-0 win at Boleyn Ground, in a game between arguably two of the most likely teams to attain promotion to the Premier League next season.

More agonising for Sam Allardyce in his first competitive game in charge was that the goal came in the 1st added minute of stoppage time at the end of the second half.

nPower League Fixtures Weekend 1

August 7th 2011 00:11
Having secured a job recently at Southampton Football Club on matchday hospitality, I was for two sweet hours an insider. At any time, I was able to pop my head above the parapet and view some Championship action; I was in the stadium before the kick off and before any fans were allowed in; I stood just a few yards from ex-Saint, Nicky Banger, who was being interviewed in the suite I worked in... And most exciting of all, the rumble you felt when thousands of fans celebrated each of the 3 goals the Saints hit in a 3-1 victory. A good day all round!

Scottish Premier League kicks off!

July 28th 2011 12:20
Try if you will to picture my delight when I realised when using my Sky Sports Football app, late in the day, that there were Scottish Premier League fixtures.

I checked several times, refreshing the app to ensure that I wasn't picking up future fixtures, that they weren't friendlies etc, and sure enough, the fixtures WERE actual Scottish Premier League fixtures

Southampton Football Club, more affectionately known as the Saints, have long had a record for producing fantastic young players, with an academy to be proud of- perhaps the finest outside the top flight.

Former Blackburn Rovers and Rangers midfielder, Barry Ferguson, has completed a move to Bloomfield Road to join Blackpool from fellow Championship side Birmingham, and open another chapter in his career.

The 33-year-old former Scotland international had 12 months left on his Birmingham City contract, and has joined the Seasiders on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee

Do you know something, I'd never heard of him prior to a news story a couple of weeks back!

I reckon he must be pretty talented- he won the 'League One Apprentice of the Year' award and Tranmere's own 'Young Player of the Year' award... but for THAT to attract interest from Bayern Münich is pretty surprising!

on Sunderland add Ji and Gardner

July 3rd 2011 21:49
Ah, I wouldn't see that happening. I think they're still pushing for 8th next season. As they only have Gyan as their main striker, I think they actually lack more than they did last season. Though they've signed Wickham, they've lost Henderson which I see as a bigger loss. Still, there is the possibility if they can hold it up in defence of a Europa place. Champions League is definitely a bite too much from the pie. Those spots are still going to be going to United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City or Tottenham. No other teams will break them, as I see...

But football is an exciting sport where anything can happen... and stranger things have happened, so who knows...

on USA vs Mexico Gold Cup Final

June 30th 2011 18:07
Hey Rick

Good article... sorry for the result- quite some comeback, eh?! And this time, Hernandez didn't even get on the scoresheet - I doubt there'll be many times Mexico score 4 goals and he fails to score!

I am pleased, of course, as a Manchester United fan- Hernandez is a fantastic player, and what a bargain he has proven to be!

But I sympathise with all my American fans.

Yes I think so! They will now have had derbies in 3 leagues- the English Premier League, Championship and now League One. I think Wednesday will have the edge this season, as they've had a year to 'bed in'. Sheffield United could go into free-fall if not careful..

Thanks for your site name. I'll take a look!
Bizarrely, unless you've paid for Sky TV, we get to watch less Premier League than any country it seems! I went to Iceland, they had English Premier League, and Carling Cup games. I went to Russia, I was able to watch two Man Utd games in a 10 day holiday. Live. On TV. No subscription..

I think, perhaps back in the early 90s they had The Big Match on one of our terrestrial channels. But since then, no free games. Now, we get the Championship games occasionally for free on a terrestrial channel, but this is the 2nd tier of football. Funnily enough, behind the Premier League, the Championship, is the 3rd most watched league in the world- in terms of attendances at the games. Higher than the combined total of all teams in the Spanish La Liga, or Italian Serie A. Only the German Bundesliga has a higher total of matchday attendance!

Thanks Rick! I hope to keep you informed.

Where in America are you? And what do you think of MLS, particularly with regards to the stream of 'close-to-the-end-of-their-ca reers' players moving across?

Which is your site?

on Villas-Boas signs Chelsea deal

June 23rd 2011 15:16
Haha! Yes, you're right there. The Chelsea board demand success, and their Champions League failures are weighing down on them.

Amazing to think that, in terms of Champions League football Avram Grant (who took two teams down in two seasons) is the most successful Chelsea manager of all time!

Absolutely agree- United have actually snapped up a bargain there. Irrespective of ability, £15m is no money at all for an Englishman these days- take Darren Bent going to Villa for £18m last season. I know I'd prefer Young than Bent..

on Porto confirm Villas-Boas departure

June 22nd 2011 08:38
It is a gamble, sure... especially given Chelsea's recent record with managers, and their lengths of tenure. But, if he proves to be 'the next Mourinho' this £13.5m fee to take him on may be deemed to be 'excellent business'.

Chelsea's fingers will be crossed that he has taken a lot of influence on from José himself!
