Food Is Entertaiment?
September 20th 2010 02:59
I began watching cooking shows during the day when I worked the night shift. I would be cleaning the house and wanted to watch something different, not "my stories", you know, soaps. The variety of shows that were on and the personalities of the chefs really captured my imagination. It was relaxing watching them cook, heck, I wanted to cook that great. But, alas, my wife doesn't like the smell produced when you cook with mandatory chef ingredients like onions, olive oil, and garlic of course. The odor lingers, and she doesn't like smelling last nights dinner when she wakes up in the morning.
But I watched them every day. I saw this new girl come on Food Network. She had a style that was new, it was modern, and she had that girl next door quality. I could watch her for hours, i liked her smile. But she only came on for half an hour, and her show was about how to cook a great dinner in thirty minutes. It was Rachel Ray and I can say I saw her first show and was praising her cooking before anyone knew who she was. But since then so much has happened, so many new faces like Giada, or Ina. Paula Dean, I went to Savannah, Ga., heck its only four hours from here down I-16, and we saw her restaurant,it was nice.
Then, a show that my wife, yes even my wife, fell in love with, Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives with Guy Fieri. WE loved watching the variety of huge foods and mouth watering Diner fare. Guy was a clown and fun to watch. And to find out he is a restaurant owner was cool. It started getting a little old ,however, I mean we still watched him but we wanted to branch out. We discovered that Food as an Entertainment venue has swept the networks. Hell's Kitchen, and recently Master Chef we love these shows. And another in the Chef Ramsey line is Kitchen Nightmares, we love Ramsey.
Travel Channel's got our absolute favorite food show in Man Versus Food with Adam Richmond. He takes food challenges to the next level and hits a few of a towns favorite spots before hitting the challenge. The Kansa City BarBQue episode was awesome. Kansas City is gorgeous and we learned how BarBQue is cooked. Wow. And new on the Travel Channel is Food Wars a show that features two restaurants that cook similar food items duking it out to find out who really makes the best food. Then there is Andy Bourdain and his food from around the world and he is an interesting guy.
And from Alpharetta, Ga. is Alton Brown of the Food Network with his scientific food show, Good Eats. The science of creating good tasting food and using scientifically accurate food items to make some common dishes but he makes them better. Well, I've gone on long enough. Gotta go see if Food is on somewhere. Yes, its 11pm I think its time for Good Eats, or maybe some Man Vs.. Food reruns.
Bon Apetite.
