First Step to Popping
September 7th 2006 04:16
For the people who are not sure what popping is, it is a funk/street dance style based on quickly contracting your muscles and relaxing them to create a jerk in the dancer's body. Hence, this is referred to as a pop. The aim of the pop is to do it to the beat of the song. This creates a sense of rhythm in your dancing.
It might sound a bit confusing however, once you master it, it looks rather amazing! Many people incorporate other forms of dancing to enhance the pop or even create and illusion with their body that just blows the audience away. Some forms are ticking, waving, gliding and strobing. As i continue with the posts these forms will become more familiar to you.
Firstly, an exercise that exentuates the pop in your body, is to make a fist with your hands, contract the muscle in your hands, wrist and forearm. Just imagine if you were going to hit someone. This is the type of contraction you should be doing. Hold for 8 seconds then relax the muscle. If you do this about five times a day on each hand over a couple weeks time your wrist and forearm should be able to pop or jerk.
This exercise can also be done with your neck, legs, and chest. Just apply the same method of contracting and relaxing.
