Look

January 11th 2010 06:42
Ok, so this movie has been out for a while. But still I think it warrants a looking at! Get it? Looking... at. But puns aside...

The movie Look, written and directed by Adam Rifkin at first glance looked like a full on documentary about the state of our world and the Big Brother theory. I thought, "Great! I love doco's that look at this sort of theme of the public sphere and how surveillance impacts on our world.

Look
"The ultimate look at our big brother world

Then I played it... IT"S A MOCKUMENTARY!!!! But I thought, hell I paid money for this thing, lets at least watch it. And by god, was I impressed! Sure, it's not actually real footage, but I couldn't help but stay and watch it. It asks some very serious questions of the viewer, and tells us that the average American person is viewed on surveillance footage 200 times a day! YES!! 200!

Although I'm not American, and have no great idea as to how many camera's are recording people in America, I still find that statistic insane! Not wanting to reveal too much as I'm sure there are people out there who have not seen it, all I will say is that this film will take you in several directions, and is not to be watched in vein.

Whether you are after a riveting film, or something that really gets your mind working, this film will sufficiently do both. But be warned, after you watch this film, you may feel like you will never be alone in public ever again.

This film gave me a whole new view on how many cameras I could actually spot out in my town, sure I had to look hard sometimes, but they are there! Oh and if you see a camera, give it a smile! Or do something random like dancing to the beat of Can't touch this, or something along those lines. The security guys need a good laugh!

You know the movie? Seems like a billion people have watched it because it has earnt that much! All I can say, is kudos to you advertising! Kudos! If the movie was based on word of mouth, it would have been alright, but still a flop. I saw it in 3D. You know, the dimension which we normally view things in. It was like going to a play and sitting on the stage. I have to admit, graphically it was a good film.

But are we that desensetised that we are just after action and no real story line? Sure it had themes of religion and war. It had a plot, be it a basic run of the mill, pilage the land type of deal. I sat down, sat through the mind numbing ads, which are not needed in this industry as they make enough money as it is. I put on my 3D goggles, watched the ads in a fuzzy haze. Laughed at the fact that the glasses made things look stupid. Then the film came on.

I watched as a military dooche in a wheelchair (yes this is so we can sympathise more with him) wheeled around for a bit. Then he talked a bit, found out his brother was killed. Watched as he mentally became this blue creature. Fair enough, you have to start a story somewhere. But for two fucking hours I had to watch him go nowhere. Now, I'm all for a plot over action, but my god, I was getting that bored I wanted the action to appear. And sure enough, there was action, it lasted long enough for me to stay and finish watching this film. All the while finding myself watching the film without the glasses in some bits to see how fuzzy the film was.

I got bored.

See this is my point, it is another film that appeals to the masses with a basic plot and action. I understand its what people want to see. And the 3D thing just gave it that childish appeal we all so crave! But for it to be one of the highest grossing films of all time sure takes the cake! Thus why I think advertising works... Hell because of its advertising campain I even went and saw it. Then left feeling a little eye raped. And a part of my soul left me that day.

Sure, like it, seems everyone does. But just think about it for a minute. Most of the highest grossing films have such basic plots, you don't need to think about the films at all. Look at Titanic, girl and guy get on a ship, fall in love, iceberg! BANG, he's drowning, she's on a door floating. WHY COULDN'T HE FLOAT ON THE DOOR WITH HER????? Oh i know, because there must be sadness...

Sure avatar didn't end in sadness, well except for the fact that their world was destroyed, and all that stuff. But it's ok, because our protagionist lived as the blue dude! Please oh please, give me a movie that actually makes me feel emotion besides anger! I'm just not content with our film system at the moment. Just to think, if it wasn't for Jaws, we might not have all these 'blockbuster' films that have standard plots and rely on advertising to pave the way for their success.

You know those ads I was talking about at the start of the movie? Three of them were for Avatar related products, whether it be the latest happy meal, or the friggin Avatar game! Seriously, they even shoved Avatar down our throats before they played the damn film!!!!

I feel sorry for the state of the Western film industry if it is going to be anything like this, we need change, but unfortunatley, money makes the world go around...

Yes, the man of infomy, in a world of killing and drugs. He's an Aussie legend, you could even call him a myth, either way, Mark 'Chopper' Reid's life makes for one hell of a story, and this is captured in the classic Aussie film, 'Chopper'.

As the tagline suggests, Don't let the truth get in the way of a good yarn. This sums up all that is great with our society, just as this film reflects what is great about the Australian film industry. We all love telling a tale that stretches the truth, but for the Author and inspiration for the film, Mark 'Chopper' Reid, the yarn is just the punchline for all that he reveals

Gday!

A big hello to u if your reading this blog!! To begin, as i am an Aussie, I think i should pay homage to the best, and indeed, the worst of Australian Cinema. Based on my experiences, the industry is as dead as anything, but of course, theres always a gem. I love Aussie films, mainly because they are the underdog of the worlds film industry, and you gotta love an underdog right?

I won't just look at Aussie films though, of course, I want to share my comments on films from around the world... I hope my blogs don't dissapoint, this is my first attempt at blogging for films, and I figured I'd do it, because I always have an opinion about films!
