Is "300" a camp film?

September 11th 2008 20:02
300 spartans
This is SPARTAAAA!

*****Disclaimer to all "300" fans....I actually thought the film was quite good, if not rather cheesy and exceptionally camp! But it was still a good watch*****

Question of the day: Has the film "300" taken the crown from "TOPGUN" as the most unintentionally camp film of all time?????

I mean lets face it is a film about a bunch of oiled up men with nicely groomed beards wondering around shouting, wearing nothing but a pair of tiny leather underpants and a flamboyant scarlet cape to finish off the outfit. There is some irony here that the target audience of "300" is essentially young guys, who are sitting in a room watching some camp guys fighting for an extended period of time....and come on it does have quite a lot of bondage vibes going on.

Could this steal the crown from TOPGUN with its lavish depictions of muscly men wondering around a steamy locker room with other men wondering around in towels. Could "300" top the now infamous volleyball scene which sees Tom Crusie and Val Kilmer batting it out in that most manly of man sports...beach volley ball

topgun volleyball
its beach volleyball time boys....

The slow montages of sweaty men boucning around high fiving each other while playing an exceptionally camp game of volleyball. The "is topgun gay" question has been around so long it has even been parodied by the likes of Quentin Tarantino amongst many others, one can never listen to "highway to the danger zone" the same way again.
But I put it to the world that maybe its time TOPGUNS crown was handed onto a new camp classic....."300" the crown is yours.....maybe..... (unless someone can think of a more suitable candidate)

REVIEW: Cloverfield

Well I really thought I was gonna hate this film, but actually it turned out to be reather enjoyable! Its complete hokum but its fun, and the novel camera work is a change from standard hollywood fare. It shot as if taken entirely on a camcorder, in the same vain as the Blair Witch Project, starting at a party of some cool rich kids and following them on their nightmare as "something" invades their city. We follow the action through the eyes of a partygoer who for some reason known to himself decides to leave the camera running as they attempt to escape from the monsters wrecking havoc.
The camera work is very shaky, deliberately so, as its all handheld ans supposed to be "amateur footage" of the action as it unfolds in real time. I really thought the shaky camera was gonna make me get motion sickness but in the end it wasnt so bad, although I did watch it on DVD, I am guessing in the cinema the shaky camerwork might have been a little more hard to take, but likeI say it was as bad as I though and afte a while I really enjoyed the "point of view" camera style.
This is no great intellectual art film or something you will discuss in great detail with your buddies but it is light hearted big budget fun, you can turn this film on and switch off your mind for 90 minutes and enjoy the ride.

CONCLUSION:Its not groundbreaking or fanstastic by anymeans but if your bored and wanna watch a film with your buddies or your girlfriend, this is worth a watch, goodlight hearted fun with a little suspence thrown in for good measure.

where in the world is osama bin laden poster

"Where in the world is Osama Bin Laden" is the latest feature length documentary film release by documentary maker Morgan Spurlock, who brought us the brilliant "Super Size Me", a scathing criticism of the commercialism of the McDonalds empire and its disregard for the health of its comsumers. Super Size Me was a hard act to follow and unfortunately I feel Morgan has stumbled on his latest offering, which is essentially a quest to try and find where Osama Bin Laden is hiding out.
It is entertaining enough and is quite fascinating to see some of the wierd and wonderful cultures that he experiences. But the film is hindered by a "kooky" storyline about "one mans mission to find Osama" which to me felt a little uneeded to have this additional storyline.
We dont discover much about Osama himself but Spurlock does highlight some of the wider issues involved such as the fact that everyone is focused on finding this one man but infact the terrorist organisation is multi faceted and capturing its figurehead will not necessarily bring the downfall of the organisation.
Spurlock is a great documentary guide and presenter, he has a natural way of presenting the facts and is not scared to get down to street level and ask difficult questions, but all the time he does this in an affable and non confrontational way, trying to let the speakers speak for themselves rather than lead them or impose his own beliefs on them.

Conclusion: all in all a good effort but it falls short of the great Super SIze Me and feels like "theres something missing", keen to see what Morgan produces next though.
