Ferrets and their diet

July 27th 2009 22:29
Ferrets can get very picky with the type of food they eat if given for a long period of time. They can also change their eating habits and become malnourished if suddenly given a drastic change in diet. So if you are planning on changing his or her diet, do so slowly, such as start off with 90% old, and 10% of their new food, then slowly increase the amount of new, while decreasing the amount of the original food.

Basic Requirements for a Ferret Diet:

* High in protein - 30-40 percent on the label nutrition analysis
* Protein must be high quality, highly digestible, and be animal-based (not plant-based)
* High in fat (at least 20 percent, perhaps up to 30 percent on the label analysis)
* Very low in carbohydrates and fiber (less than 3 percent fiber)

Do not feed them:

marshmallows
potato chips
chocolate
peanut butter
ice cream
soft drinks (soda)
fruits
raisens

ferrets like treats such as cooked eggs and raw meats. I know a lot of people feed their ferrets cat food, which CAN be okay sometimes, however most cat foods are intended for the nutritional needs of CATS, not ferrets, therefore they do not give them the complete value of nutrients necessary for them to be healthy. Even if you do decide you want to feed him or her cat food, AVOID GENERIC BRANDS. The reason they are so much cheaper is because they don't have the nutrients your pet needs.

Your text goes here Hey!! First post is always a mess, right?? haha. My name is Ashley and I love animals, ferrets especially. I know a lot of people are very unaware of how wonderful these furry little critters are, so I figured I would at least try to give people the knowledge I have about them, and maybe change a few minds about them.

Did you know that in some states, to own ferrets, you have to have a license. Yeah. That's what I thought. {{WHAT???}} Anyways, back to the point. Get this- some states don't even allow you to have a ferret at all. For those new ferret owners, or those of you thinking about/planning to buy one, here is a list of sites that can help. But if you live in California or Hawaii, there's no point in even checking, because these two states do not allow ferrets AT all. Neither does Washington D.C, or most military bases
