Felipe Massa, The 2007 Formula 1 World Champion???

November 23rd 2006 18:21
The Brazilian Ferrari Driver Felipe Massa said to Gazzetta dello Sport in an Interview that he believes that he can be the 2007 World Formula 1 Champion

He has a big chance of pulling this off because Ferrari are already seen as favourites for next season due to their great partnership with Bridgestone, which will be the only tire supplier for next years season!!!

Massa will be joined at Ferrari by Kimi Raikkonen who also said about Felipe that he is probably the one that he will battle with for the championship!!!

Massa had a great season this year winning two Grand Prixs: in Turkey and Bahrain and has a very good chance in front of Kimi due to his great partnership with the Ferrari Team and because Kimi still remains to be seen how well will he adapt at the Italian Team!!!

114 days left till the first Start of the 2007 Formula 1 Season and we already have every clue needed to make us believe that Next Years Season will be a season to remember!!!

I still question his lapses in concentration whilst on the job...but there's no denying that out of all the favourites for the title next year, he's definitely leading the pack due to his familiarity with the team and car than anything else.

Totally agree with you... I think this is caused by the fact that he is more an intuitive driver than a strategic one...
And in what concerns the team... I`m very curious to see how he performs under the pressure of Kimi Raikkonen... with Schumi he knew from the start he was number two... but now... he has a chance to be the man... and a tough fight also which comes along with this chance... Hope the Team doesn`t suffer because of the dispute that will be betwen Felipe and Kimi... because an internal competition will be for sure!!! Both young and both hungry for the world title!!!

Another debatable question: Do you think there really wouldn't be any team orders at Ferrari?

I'm still a bit sceptical. Sure, they've come out to say that both drivers would be on a level playing field next season, but I just can't help but feel that they would favour Raikkonen if it came down to making a call.

Yes you`re right here... again... This will be even more interesting because of the fact that Raikkonen has a very strong contract with Ferrari... and I don`t think Felipe has one as strong as Raikkonen`s... Ferrari always played their cards right only when thay had a 1st and a 2nd driver... And I don`t see Ross Brown and Jean Todt changing a winning strategy...
Many don`t know if they will make a revolutionary move... but I for one wouldn`t change a strategy that has won so many Formula 1 Championships...
This also remains to be seen... and I think will find the answer to this one soon... before the start of the first race...!!!
Also there is another thing to take into consideration here...If Massa accumulates more points through out the season than Kimi ... I don`t see Ferrari still supporting Kimi... because the Drivers Title is much more important than an internal battle...
Also there may be some restrictions in what concerns overtaking to prevent a direct fight betwen the two drivers... this could be a solution to this problem!!!

Last part of past season shows Massa in his best light . Personally , I like his style and i agree with you , he could be a serious competitor next season. Unfortunately, Ferrari have very rigid rules about drivers positions in team , so I'm afraid he must listen whatever Brown and Todt say.

Don't forget about Alonso too. I know many people do not believe in him in 2007. But I'm sure , in 2007. he will be very serious competitor for title race again.

Ross Brawn will not be around for next season - he's taking a sabbatical.

I'm not sure of Jean Todt's involvement in the team either now that he is CEO of Ferrari. He'll still be involved, no doubt, but maybe just a bit less.

I personally feel that "on a level playing field", Kimi would the number 1 driver. But like you said, should something happen to him, then Ferrari would have no qualms backing Massa instead.

The same thing happened when Schumi was out injured and the team had to back-up Irvine for the driver's championship instead. Schumi returned and had to aid Irvine's quest for the team's cause.

Daressi: I think Alonso will only be as competitive as his car allows.

I could never forget Alonso... he can also do a wonderfull job next year... but I hope McLaren will not ruin his chances by providing a less competitive car... in the last years McLaren haven`t done so well... they seem to have problems and I don`t think Alonso will stay another year if McLaren doesn`t give him something to fight with for the title!!!
The ball is in McLaren`s hands now... because Alonso doesn`t need to prove to anybody that he is a great driver... he won 2 consecutive championships with Schumacher still driving a F1 car... but McLaren has a lot to prove in order to make peace with their dissapointed fans after their winningless season... which was 2006...

Agree guys , beside driver, cars and tyres are always main prerequisites for good results. I'm making a little break of F1 lately so I do not follow closely news from F1 World . But tings will be more clear for month or two. Then we will know exactly shape of McLaren team .

Btw, I also tip F1 , and about half of last season I was author for F1 section at www.freebetting.net.

I really don`t know the meaning of the word sabbatical... sorry!!!

In what concerns Jean Todt... I have heard about that... and I think that he will still be very much involve in making the team strategy or training someone for this in the future... But also I have to wonder about something else: Will Schumacher be involve with Ferrari next year??? I heard some rumours on the net that Schumi is still going to be a part of Ferrari... not as a driver...

I have to wonder about Schumi being the next brain behind Ferrari`s team strategies!!! He could be very good at this... and I don`t think he will stay away from Formula 1 as he said...!!! I don`t think he`ll drive a car but he will be there... Ferrari needs him...!!!

Good point... Daressi... I think the Spring Testing will tell us more about what will be happening next year in Formula 1... and I think this will also give us some clues about what Ferrari will do next year and how they`ll aproach the changes that has been made after Schumi`s retirement!!!

Sabbatical basically means resting for a period of time, which is exactly what Ross Brawn is doing - he's taking a break from F1 for at least the whole of next season so he will not be involved with Ferrari or F1.

Schumi will be working as a talent scount for Ferrari. Apparently, he has a good eye for spotting talent and had previously said that Raikkonen would be a top driver long before he even made the break into F1.

Therefore, he won't have a direct influence on the running of the F1 team.

Thx for explaining the word sabbatical to me...
What you said about Schumi I already knew but i wasn`t very sure if there is a contract for that or not... it wasn`t about that... Like some critics, I don`t see Schumi`s involvement in Formula 1 staying only at that level... knowing the Team was built around him!!! When Schumi came from Benetton he came with the whole package and I have to wonder if his involvememt next year will be the glue to keep the team working efficiently!!!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a confirmed contract - and a very well paid talent scout contract I might add!

I don't see Schumi's involvement in F1 being limited to just a scouting role either, but for the upcoming season at least, I think that will be his role.

One of the main reasons he retired was to spend more time with his family so I don't think he'd be doing anything too time consuming for the foreseeable future.

Another reason why he won't be too involved is the pressure he would have on Kimi and Massa if he were to have a huge say on team affairs. Imagine the hard time the new boy would have with Schumi still breathing down his neck?

Sometimes, you need to cut ties with an imposing figure (or at least allow things to cool off for a while) in order for a team to move on.

You have a point here... and you are very right about Schumachers reasons for retiring...
I also think that the Ferrari Team cut the ties with Schumi because of the need for a change... on the marketing level especially!!!
