Federer and Serena in a class of their own
February 8th 2010 13:36
Federer is the most serene and graceful player imaginable. Serena is a freak of nature, a pit bull, who seems more physically suited to the NFL then women’s tennis.
The 2010 Australian Open was all about the world’s two greatest players, Roger Federer and Serena Williams.
The incomparable duo cemented their status as the best players of the modern era and possibly all time after savouring more grand slam glory in Melbourne.
On the surface they appear complete opposites.
Federer is the most serene and graceful player imaginable. He is lean and can move around the court like a ballerina. His deft shots are all class, fitting his Swiss precision heritage. He embodies Switzerland’s beauty.
Serena is all LA. Showy, physical, all grunt and force, slightly tacky and superficial yet entertaining.
She is a freak of nature, a pit bull, who seems more physically suited to the NFL then women’s tennis.
Serena is more muscled then Federer, actually she is more ripped then any male player bar Nadal.
The American has the most powerfully built legs in the sport, thick hips and heaving DD breasts, the envy of any porn star. (How does Serena run with those massive boobs? I know she wears tight padded bra but still it makes her feats even more impressive).
Their personalities could not be more different.
Federer has assumed the elder statesmanship of men’s tennis. He has a deep and cultured understanding of the game and knows his place in the sport’s history.
Serena? I doubt she would even know who Martina Navratilova is. Serena is all urban hip hop. Black, rich, celebrity, glamour and LA. That’s Serena in a nutshell.
She wants to conquer Hollywood and be a global icon. Fine, she is closer to Shaq then Michael Jordan. In other words, happy to be ranked in the sport’s elite but not obsessed over being the greatest.
Serena isn’t interested in tennis history or even the distinct possibility of becoming women’s tennis’ best ever.
She thrives in the moment. How does she continually win grand slams when she hardly competes in any other tournaments?
Aura and mental strength.
And that’s what she and Federer share, that no other player does, with the exception of perhaps a fully fit Rafael Nadal.
It’s actually what separates the legends from mere mortals and what humble Joes like me or you can never fully comprehend.
MJ, Tiger, Warne, Federer, Serena. They respond to the moment and all its pressures with the clearest and most positive of mindsets, which lets their bodies react accordingly to its sublime talents.
Federer and Serena won their tournaments in the quarter finals.
Both looked set for losses. Both were down and out in the second. Both clawed their way back from the death and then ripped the heart out of their shell shocked opponents.
There was no way Federer or Serena were not going to win the tournament after that.
Expect 2010 be no different to the past decade. It will be Federer and Serena’s show. And sit back and enjoy how they conquer the sport in their own unique ways.
