I am not a professional writer. But hope some one is getting some benefit after reading this.
I came across these wonderful websites [http://www.lowvisionkids.com/resources.php and http://www.eyeassociates.com/ ] which gives a hope for people with low vision.
Nowadays,I think most of us should agree that, when our kids get sick we immediately google and find out all the details about the particular disease, the do's and don'ts etc....
It is very hard to accept that your own child or a dear one is visually impaired.Studies show that low vision individuals are definitely benefited by using the low vision aids but still has to do a regular yearly visit to their low vision specialists.
I like the quote,"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage" by someone. When I personally saw a visually impaired individual working in a Low Vision Center, explaing about a CCTV to a new low vision patient,I must say my perspective of life has definitely changed.
What I can do is provide my share of details for this partially impaired group in this Low vision awareness month.
I am not talking about the affordable community, who can buy their own CCTV's[closed circuit televisions] or other updated aids.
I am talking about visually impaired individuals who once been diagnosed, go to a supermarket, get an ordinary magnifier for a low cost and try to satisfy themselves. This second group has definitely a chance for a better vision in non profit organizations like the Low Vision Centers in their area. These centers may provide financial aids/loans for CCTV's or other costly aids.
Apart from ordinary magnifiers/canes/braille there is a whole lot of products are available in the market. These products make a lot of difference in a low vision individuals in their routine life.
Here are a few websites which give a better idea of what I am talking about:
Really Long Link
Really Long Link
Really Long Link
For example, signature guide may look like a kids stencil for those, whose vision is normal. But it makes a whole lot of difference for the visually impaired.
So the lighting, contrast, field of vision all make a difference in the quality of their life.
If you know somone with impaired vision ask them to visit a nearby Low Vision Center and get their best treatment ever.
