Father starves mischievous son to death

October 24th 2006 17:35
read about this incident a couple of days ago and just can’t seem to get it out of my head.

According to this article, a father starved his five-year-old son to death for being “mischievous”....(What the ???????)

Dhurau Ram Majhi, 34, a resident of a village in Raigarh district, locked up his son, Suraj, in a small stuffy room and made him go without food and water for four days.

This is sooo heart-breaking.

Preschoolers can be demanding, whiny and mischievous and I know I get mad at my kids often but this kid definitely didn’t deserve this punishment.

How can the father even think of doing this for so long? Even if he was angry with his kid, I’m sure he couldn’t stay angry for four days?

Where was the mother? I know that in rural India, wives generally don’t have much of a say but for a boy to be locked up for four days is a long long time.

What about neighbors?? There's got to be some other saner grown up in the vicinity !

I’m hoping this incident gets publicized enough and generates enough furore that the father will be punished immediately.

I am not a strong proponent of the death penalty but as a parent I want the father to be punished in the same manner he punished his son...I'm still getting chills just thinking about it

Please help get the word out so that the father gets his just punishment

Unfortunately things like this tend to happen in countries such as India or Africa. I think it is heart breaking to read such stories also. However, if it happens in the U.S then it is made into a bigger deal than this incident in India. It's almost like it's expected there or something.

As for you wondering where his mother was...that's an entirely different can of worms. Depending if the man was Muslim would tell you how much authority the mother had over what the man was doing. And chances are the mother is not alive anymore and this poor little boy had to face his father's wrath without anyone's love or help.

Good blog.

It's just very disheartening that something so heart wrenching is considered normal anywhere in the world.

For heaven's sake - India is a progressing democratic nation and not still stuck in the 18th century

But it's acts like these that give it a bad name

I'm hoping the government acts and restores the faith of its citizens

The next time someone even thinks of doing something like this , they will remember that this father got punished and it will serve as a deterrent.

I agree and hope for the sake of children and others in that country that they make an example of this man. I believe that India is far more advanced than other countries and they really do need to begin acting the part, especially when problems like this arise and it seems "normal".

Whoa. That's harsh. What kind of a parent doesn't know the limits of "discipline"? Regarding the setting of the crime, though, I'm thinking it's in some distant rural village where the central government doesn't really see (or care) what's going on. That's a sad fact of life. Sometimes, the system just lacks the resources to go after these kinds of criminals.

@Ragin Cajun.....agree it is one of those sad facts of life....that it doesn't become a "accepted" part of life - wherever it is

Miss Faith....India is highly advanced in some respects while terribly backwards in others....wish it's "advancement" was more linear. I do agree with u in wishing they make an example of this man - though haven't heard any updated news
