Fat Tires and Friendly Faces
August 13th 2010 15:16
Now that the heat wave has moderated, the morning exercisers, bikers, walkers, joggers and the occasional skater, are out again - but in one way it feel more like April than August. We're friendly.
Under normal conditions, sociability is inversely related to speed. The slow people, walkers and cruiser and comfort bikes, wave as they pass. People on cruiser bikes even pause to say good-morning. Runners and road bikes don't wave, and if they say anything it's "on your left" by way of warning before they whiz past.
These rules don't apply during the first week of spring, when we emerge from hibernation, and even the most serious joggers find time for a hand wave, a sort of welcome back. Now, even though we've been hiding indoors for only two weeks, springtime rules are in effect and there's a feeling of reunion. It won't last, but it shows something about how long it takes before we miss each other.
