Now all the analysis is over here’s my assessment of RAWF at beautiful Circular Quay

When Rosemount Australian Fashion Week opened the mainstream media paid some attention to the happenings of fashion, but unfortunately there has not been much to report (although I was impressed by Lili’s marketing manager, whoever you are, your brand was plastered all over the six o’clock news receiving more attention than the ‘official’ exhibitors of the day as the result of a blitzkrieg of showings on the city streets). While Alex Perry’s dresses, for example, are attractive, well made and constructed from beautiful fabrics, they exhibit all the trends which we’ve seen for at least the last year. The short, bodyline dresses – which everyone is so keen to point out are reminiscent of Robert Palmer’s video clip – and the opposing bubble hem short and floaty numbers. Many of Australia’s leading designers suffer from a tendency to follow rather than set trends. A few exceptions exist but we’re primarily left with the ‘Camilla and Marc’s of fashion.
Why is it that Australia with a significantly different climate and cultural history still copies the trends set by the Europeans and Americans? With a smaller market and fewer trappings of tradition we can only long for Australian designers to recognise their own freedoms. So Lisa Ho, et al, show us something new next time, please.
