Fact: Stonehenge

December 6th 2006 06:19

Stonehenge is an ancient monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, the remains of four massive trilithons surrounded by concentric circles of megaliths, probably constructed c. 3100 BC.

Stonehenge is architecturally unique and underwent three phases of construction. The first phase, Stonehenge I, began around 3100 BC. The second phase, Stonehenge II, began around 2100 BC, and the third phase, Stonehenge III, around 2000 BC.

The reasons for its design and construction are not known, but according to most theories it was a place of worship. Archaeologists have long been fascinated by this monument because it gives evidence of massive manpower input; one calculation suggests that Phase III alone took 30 million man-hours to construct.

Hi Jessicca

Stonehenge is a truly awesome structure, considering that the men who built it had to move all those huge stones to that place without any of our modern day technology or engineering expertise.

A wonderful and inspiring place.

Hi Andrea!

Thanks for dropping by, beautiful and kid angel! ^_^

Yes it is facinating and the thing is some even said (rumours I mean) that they have Alien technology to do so. Perhaps at that time men do have a certain technology that was long lost through time.

But with our current strength, it is a little easier to maintain it than before. Hats up to those who worked hard at that era to built it.

Have you read the Diana Gabaldon book, Cross Stitch?

She has some interesting (made-up) theories about stone circles. Definitely worth a read if you're into historical novels.

They also said the same thing about the Pyramids as well, so I understand, that they were built by aliens as some kind of map or something similar. I suppose it's just the egos of modern man talking ... not believing that people from ancient times could achieve such a feat of engineering skill.

Than again ... maybe it is the aliens ... Stargate SG-1 say it is and I believe them!!!

Perhaps the Gods that men worshiped at that time were in fact Aliens (?)

Could be you know. They build to honour the Gods and the Gods teach them how to build worship places.

That can be one theory.

No I have read Diana Gabaldon's book, "Cross Stitch" but when I get the time I would definitely dig for that book. ^_^

Stonehenge is indeed fascinating. It's such a shame that you can't get particularly close to the stones, though I understand that they have to protect them.

Hi Nina!

Thanks for dropping by! ^_^

Really? I didn't know that you can't go near to them anymore. I guess it is one of those protected tourist sites now.

How close can you get to the Stonehenge, do you know?

Jessicca,

You are certainly keeping us busy.

All that alien theory has been dismissed as pure rubbish, those places were built by man.

Ingenuity rather than engineering was what they used.

We could do with more of those kind of resources, nowadays.

Even here, really, but I guess I'm as deficient on this one as everyone else is.

Hi katyzzz!

Thank you for your continuous support ^_^

You always make my rainy days (which is currently happening - thunderstorms rowling from a distance, raining) into sunshine!

Well, does this mean that because of engineering and modern technology many of our brains has "shrunk"?

Or perhaps we are getting too comfy that we don't have new ideas popping out anymore?

But I also see that this gift of ingenuity is mostly misused in crimes nowadays. So sad.

Jessicca, It's about ten years since I've been there so it may have changed since then, but the closest you can get is about ten metres away.

Oh ok.... so it is still pretty near, not too near though.

How was it being there? Must be magnificient!

If one day pound worth less in the exchange rate perhaps I'll pop there and see them myself. ^_^

I was only 10 when I went, so the place had a magical and eerie wonder to it. I'd love to go back again to see if the place still has that same feel now that I'm an adult.

Hi Nina!

I guess as long as we keep our minds open without too much anticipation we would feel that wonderous yet mysterious feeling from the wonderous of the StoneHenge. These are one of those wonders of the world that is an amazing creation by mankind.

I actually preferred such creation than skyscrapers these days.

Interesting fact on the Stonehenge. I just visited your extra Gallery link and it is really nice to see them up close.

Like one of the members here said, it has an eerie feeling to it yet nice to see. Such wonders of mankind's masterpiece must be protected and maintained for the sake of our future generations.

Great to see you again! Your continous support is really amazing!

Yes, we must preserve mankind's artifacts before destroyed by modern egoism.

Hi Anonymous,

This is indeed a very interesting piece of article you've got there.

I believe I've heard about that possible theory many years back but it would still a very thoughtful question, "Why would the statues in Eastern Island looked like men? It would just be some shape to work in engineering purposes..."

Where did you heard this theory before?
Of course the statues are men status. The problem was how to put them in the right place.

I can't remember, but I think it was on some documentary before and I either saw or heard when I was a lot younger. One of my very old friends talked about the stonehenge engineering technology, but I can't remember when as I was still a young student then.

Sorry I can't help much. But it is interesting why the statue or men are there in a particular position...

Please try to remember harder about that friend of yours. Why didn't I have ever heard about that technology in any book?
I see that you know a lot more... What do you mean by their particular position? Where can I see a map of the statues?

Hi JCaeiroAntunes,

Thanks for dropping by again. ^_^

I will try to do my best to remember which friend of mine. I have another friend who was very resourceful about such things but unfortunately we lost contact and till now me and the rest of his close friends are still searching for him. Sigh...

However, I do not recall any book published but there were some documentary shown many years back about the Eastern Islands statues. Yet it is still a mystery I suppose.

If I get anymore interesting information of this I will definitely let you know.

Have a great day!
