Fact: Contact Lenses
November 29th 2006 08:34
A contact lens is an artificial lens designed to fit over the cornea of the eye in order to correct vision.
The first contact lenses, invented in 1887 by Adolf Fick, were made of glass and were used to correct astigmatism. It was not until the development of sophisticated optical instruments and plastic materials in 1948 that the modern-day contact lens was invented by Kevin Tuohy.
Personal note:
Recently I also heard that there are new studies, like what it was invented to do in the begining, that make contact lenses for night wear to sleep to correct power and astigmatism. One of my friends are trying this and the power readings are slowly lowered.

Those power-reading lowering contact lenses sound interesting. I wear contacts and it might be nice to at least have my eyesight being improved while my eyes are going all dry and red... I bet they're expensive though.
I also read, maybe in Time magazine, something about lenses that could somehow be stitched to the eye, probably semi-permanant. I don't know if those are the same thing, but I know they're relatively new technology.

Well, the technology that my friend is trying out right now is not an implant. You just wear it to sleep at night and take it out when you wake up.
However, though the effects are great when you take it out and you can see better vision, it will wear off by evening and you need your glasses again, and then you can wear them to sleep again.
During the 1 month process, my friend's power has been lowered in a few stages and they will continue to give her a different pair. I am not sure how long every pair. And yes, they are very expensive because it is custom made for your eyes.
But it still beat surgery or laser for your eyes. A safer version to ulter your vision - my friend says.
Thanks for dropping by! ^_^

Fear not, they aren't made of glasses anymore in this era. LOL...
