The Migration in Australia.

October 30th 2006 15:48
Melbourne is one of the biggest "greek cities" of the world. Darwin is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in AUstralia. The immigration brought to Perth, the far-off capital of western Australia, a british and south-african taste.

Although being a country shaped by an immigrants wave, Australia have an insecurity toward foreigners.

The government is compromised toward the multi-culturalism. The Immigration Office have tried not to discriminate.
These policies do work in a similar way like any other corporation: Australia recruit labour who have qualification for filling the country's needs.

In the past, about 1820, Australia competed with the countries of the New World for having migrants - especially with United States and Canada. However, at this moment, getting a visa to Australia can become a tough task due to the global terrorism.

The government continues to face a wave of critique for the way they treat those who try the asylum policy. Any boat deriving from Indonesia, for example - is detained to be judged. The detention is justified as being an security and sanitary issue.
Whether the last federal election's results, in 2001, are an indication, the most australians seem to aprove such policy.
During the last two generations, a discriminatory immigration policy in Australia tried keeping the marks of its european background avoiding a huge number of asians of entering in the country. This policy was abandoned in the middle of the 70's.

The immigration will cause problems to Australia in a very soon future, inclusively putting up higher pressure on the racial relations and overcrowded big cities, especially Sydney. It will also show off great opportunities in a moment the nation seek a modernity future and multi-culturalism.

The Migration Issue

October 30th 2006 12:56
The migration is normally faced as a recent phenomenon. Nevertheless, a few people are able to come back three generations and not find one single immigrant among their ancestral. Especially on the North and South America, whose are virtually compound of immigrants and their descendants.

The actual migration, it is believed, that is more common and the people traverse longer distances, so that, the cultural differences are bigger as well as the problems.

Europe

In 1620, during the Golden Age in Holland, one person in each 10 people group had been born in another country. In the dutch cities like Amsterdan, this proportion were of one person in each 4 people group.

The journeys used to last for a longer time in the past. People walked or navigated for weeks to arrive to their destiny.

The Communication changeover - telephones, televisions and internet - reduced the cultural differences among regions as never seen before.

People left their country to escape from hunger, war or oppression. They were, several times, captured and exiled against their will.

Many others simply left for the chance of a better life.

The migration of men was better registered than the women themselves. The departure of men was seen as a great loss(to the nation, to the community, to the Army, to the tax authority), and the men's arrival was seen as a bigger menace than the women's.

In the Past, in Europe, population feared that the newcomer would dilute their original culture, violate their moral pattern, rob their women and deprave their language.

Somehow, the newcomer had always lived isolated.

The feeling of fear toward immigrants is a reflex of the fear of change and especially of the changing of culture. Culture is not, nevertheless, a static idea.

Cultures have been changing constantly during these days. The cultures, as we know nowadays, are the result of centuries of migration.

Here in Australia, 1/4 of the population were born overseas. The british are the largest immigrants group, as well as the asians, followed by neo zealanders and italians.

on Is Mexico to the States what Greece is to Europe?

November 1st 2006 10:30
I dont know how is the relantioship Greece and Europe, but i do know about the Mexico-US. First of all, i do not agree when people say "it's a troublemaking neighbour". If there weren't mexicans in US, all the restaurants, cleaning companies, nanny agencies and hospitallity agencies would be closing the doors down, this is a fact. The US as well as Australia and Canada depends on immigrant labour as they are countries shaped by overseas people and they really give to them a great life opportunity.
In my opinion, it's a wrong way to describe mexicans as being troublemaking as ironically US has been always needing their labour!

on Day Vs. Night?

Well, your body needs the sunlight otherwise you are on risk to get a "chemistry depression", that's what normally happens in London during the winter when the night falls earlier than usually does. You look at the sky at 4pm and it's already dark. They sell a kind of light for warming your body providing a slighlty light energy, so that you dont get TOO DEPRESSED. I got depressed a few weeks ago here in Sydney because of the wheather, always cloudy. However things now are better!!!!! Spring has sprung!
That's why i'd rather to have a sunny day!!!!!!
