Cam Newton wins Heisman

December 13th 2010 15:48
Five months ago the average college football fan hadn’t heard of Cam Newton, now after watching him have his way with every team, including the reigning BCS Champions it’s hard to see why he wouldn’t win the Heisman. Well somewhere between then and now, about the time people started to notice Auburn (what a coincidence) the young man came under allegations that he was going to take cash benefits to attend Mississippi State, well to be more clear his father was going to accept the cash to help his ailing churches. The story goes back before that though, it all started in Florida, when a younger Cam was basically given the choice leave or be expelled for burglary, and obstruction of justice. He then transferred to Blinn College where he led the team to a NJCAA Championship while throwing 22 TDs and rushing for another 16. He then transferred again to an Auburn school that wasn’t in the preseason top 25 and picked to go .500 in the conference.

It didn’t take long for Cam to continue his dominance from the year before, racking up 14 combined touchdowns in only the first four games. It also didn’t take long for the NCAA to come down on him, maybe it’s because of his history, or maybe it’s because they were still on a high from getting Reggie Bush, and figured if another high profile name was tarnished then no one would ever cheat. Well the NCAA needs to rethink that, instead of just pursuing big names if they suspended everybody who cheated it would work a lot better, a good player who takes benefits but never plays up to expectations needs to be looked at too. Just because they aren’t that good doesn’t mean that what they did wasn’t wrong too.

Even though Cam was so clearly innocence (it’s not his fault his dad was shopping him around), and even the NCAA realized this, many people said that he shouldn’t win it because he was investigated at all, and that the Heisman trust says “The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the most outstanding college football player who’s performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity.” So even if he really is innocent, he stole a laptop. However we all know that the Heisman is really awarded to the best player without regards to integrity, so no matter what Cam supposedly did, he is still by far the best player in college football this year. Maybe if the distance between his stats and those of the next player weren’t that different then you could be justified in not voting for him, but it wasn’t even close.

Luckily it seems as if mostly everyone agreed with me, as Cam won by over 1,000 points, and instead of saying how this whole year was his dad’s fault he thanked him, and said it wouldn’t be possible without him. (Seems like he does have integrity after all doesn’t it) So Cam Newton won the Heisman by about as much as he won his other conquests this year, let’s hope he gets to keep it.

Best Basketball Conference

December 10th 2010 16:29
We all know the argument, the Big East is the best conference because they send the most teams to the tournament every year, the Big Ten is the best because they have the highest quality teams from top to bottom. Well I’m going to try to find out the best major conference of this year, by using number of ranked teams, record against ranked teams, and record against the other big six conferences. The conference with the most ranked teams will get six points and the one with the least will get one point, I will do this for every category and hopefully be able to get a good measure on which is the best.
The conference with the most ranked teams is the Big East (6), followed by the Big Ten, and Big 12 (both with five) the SEC comes in fourth with only two teams, and finally the PAC-10 and ACC both only have a measly one team.
Second I looked at the records against the other big six conferences, and found only three actually have winning records. The Big East comes in first again, with a record of 21-11 (.656) then the Big Ten with a decent 14-10 (.583) the last team with a winning record is the SEC with 12-11. (.522) The ACC comes in fourth with a record of 15-22 (.405) followed by the Big 12 10-16 (.385) lastly the Pac-10 has a record of 7-12 (.368

A young man named Adam Sisson has been ruled ineligible for his senior season because he was born not a month to early or even a week, but a mere 12 hours. The rules say that if you turn 19 before august 1st then you can’t play, and he was born July 31st, I can see if he was born June 31st but that close they minus well just let him play. This isn’t a case of his dad holding him back in the eighth grade to have an advantage, back firing, but it happened in third grade because of a learning disability, are you kidding me? A kid is being punished for something that happened in elementary school!?
The leagues executive director Ken Tilley, said that the rule was created to keep a “competitive balance” in sports, well parents if little Sally doesn’t do so well in kindergarten you should probably send her to summer school if she has any hopes of playing basketball one day. Has Tilley forgotten what it was like to play a high school sport, no kid is paying attention in Spanish, they are all thinking about the game that night, especially seniors, I can honestly say senior year sports are the highlight of any athletes senior year, but for Adam he’s know thinking about the game he can’t play in.
Adam was supposed to star for not only football, but also basketball, and baseball, but he has already missed basically the whole football season and basketball isn’t looking to good. Now don’t think that Adam is just taking this, him and his father are fighting the ruling and are seeing a federal Judge soon, hopefully the Judge sees reason and reinstates him, because even though the league ruined his football season, all his not lost for basketball and baseball, and good thing Adam is being the mature one here, still supporting his teammates, getting them pumped before games, dressing and standing on the sideline. I say if they win give him the MVP just to show people like Ken Tilley

Mike Tyson, and Hugo Caesar Chavez were inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame, but these two middling boxers were overshadowed by the induction of perhaps the greatest boxer of all time, Rocky Balboa. You know the man who nobody knew, until he went the distance with Apollo Creed, and then singlehandedly ended the Cold War, when he showed The Russian what happens when you mess with America. Finally we all remember when an old, old Rocky came out of retirement to go ten rounds with the champ Mason “The Line” Dixon, I mean Muhammad Ali never did that.
Wait you mean that never happened? Those were just movies? And Rocky is really Sylvester Stallone, so why, and how did he get inducted. Has boxing really falling that low that someone who played a boxer in a movie can get inducted, what’s next will Samuel L. Jackson get into the basketball hall of fame for playing coach Carter? Now don’t get me wrong I love the Rocky movies, they are probably one of the greatest series of movies ever, but Stallone was also Rambo so does that mean he should get a Purple Heart? I know that some people think it was a good move because the movies were so influential and good for boxing, but for the last forty years (about the time of the first Rocky movie) boxing’s popularity has been slowly dropping, so it looks like the movies really didn’t help that much. It also takes a little away from the other inductees because in twenty years when someone looks at this year’s inductees, they might assume it was a weak year because an actor got in, thus taking away from Chavez. That said I’m pretty sure the only reason Tyson got in is because of the haymaker he threw in The Hangover.

Syracuse, Michigan St. recap

December 8th 2010 15:02
The game started off almost as if I scripted it myself, on the first play of the game Michigan St. turned over the ball and Kris Joseph came up with it, and got fouled making one of two free throws. Then for a few moments it seemed like the Spartans were going to run away with it, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Syracuse called a quick timeout and stopped all momentum, and worked quickly to get back into the game and after five minutes they clung to a one point lead. All of a sudden it was as if the flood gates opened and Syracuse went on a tear (helped greatly by Spartan turnovers, and bad shot selection) and the Orange went on a 16-5 run to jump out to a 27-16 lead, with Rick Jackson leading the way with 10 points and 9 rebounds in the first half. Michigan St. tried to answer with their own run and got within five at one point but Syracuse shut them down and the first half ended 38-29 with Syracuse dominating most aspects of the game.

The second half began with a Spartan three but Joseph was fouled on a three and made all foul shots to respond. In the beginning of the second half Michigan St. stubbornly kept shooting threes, fortunately for them the Orange couldn’t capitalize on their lack of offense as both teams struggled early, both starting the second half 1-6 in field goals. Finally it was the Spartans that got hot, going on a 13-4 run to get within 2, but a Deon Waiters three shut down any momentum they had, and Syracuse stretched their lead back to 9

Chris Bosh and company win 5 straight

December 7th 2010 19:54
Okay I know that if you’re like me than your sick of hearing about the Heat, but I have big news they just won their fifth straight! Wait a minute why is it such a big deal that the team that was put together to go 82-0 won five in a row, well to put it bluntly they have kind of sucked this year. When LeBron first went to the Heat I figured that his scoring output might drop to like 24 points a game but Dwayne Wade was going to be dropping at least 40 a night while sitting out the whole fourth quarter. The team was going to average at least 150 a game and cruise to the championship, but we all know that isn’t the case, the Heat have struggled early and until this win-streak barely hanging on to a .500 record.
LeBron is their leading scorer with 23.7, last year him, Wade, and Bosh all averaged over that themselves, and they have all lost about 5 points a game of their output from last year. I know most people will probably disagree with this but, it’s not LeBron’s fault they haven’t been doing well, their supporting players just aren’t performing well enough. When LeBron, Wade and, Bosh won an Olympic gold it wasn’t with the team they are playing with this year, it was with players like Kobe, Carmelo Anthony and other perennial all-stars. It seems like its been largely forgotten that it wasn’t just those three who were on the team, and yes if it was the entire USA basketball team then they would destroy everyone.
Then they need a reliable three point threat, LeBron and Wade are both slashers, they are going to take it to the basket and yes probably dunk over at least two guys. However I wouldn’t trust either of them from behind the arc unless they are hot but, they think they are, and teams know this, they are more than happy to clog the lane and let them shoot threes all day, and both are more than happy to oblige. That’s why both are shooting low percentages, hopefully for them when Mike Miller (a career 40% shooter who shot 48% last year) comes back it will open the lanes for both of them to do go back to what they do best

Intro

December 7th 2010 15:18
So my other blog deals with only college basketball, and at first I thought that would be enough, but it only took me about 24 hours to realize it would be fun to write on the broader spectrum of sports. So this blog will cover what I think are some of the more important sports stories. Just to warn you I will put my own spin on things and at times be very sarcastic, but other than that I hope you enjoy it.

Welcome

December 6th 2010 20:54
Hi, this blog will deal mostly with college basketball because, I'm not a big fan of the NBA. I will talk about what I think important matchups are and also do my own version of the top 25. I'll tell you straight up that I will probably be a little biased towards West Virginia, and the Big East, but I won't say that its the refs fault they lost and if the other team does outclass them I will admit it. Now that I've said a little bit about this blog let’s move on to what it’s really about, college basketball. My first important matchup I am going to talk about is Syracuse vs. Michigan St. This game is important for both teams, Cuse because they have not really played a quality team yet, yes they are undefeated, but they have still looked shaky against lesser opponents. Michigan St. doesn't need the win as much because this is basically the same team that made it to the final four last year, where Syracuse lost three starters including their leading scorer in Wesley Johnson, and possibly thier most important player in Andy Rautins. However after losing to Duke a week ago it might seem like the Spartans were ranked a little too high if they lose to the much less talented Syracuse. For Syracuse to win they must play as a team and not hope for one player to take over the game, as they have been doing lately because the Spartans are too good for that to work, they also need their highly touted freshmen Fab Melo to finally score in double digits, and possibly play around twenty minutes. For Michigan St. to win they need to cut down on their turnovers, Kalin Lucas’s turnover to assist rate is down to about 1.3 from 2.0 last year, and he’s not the only one. My prediction is that Michigan St. will win down the stretch in a tightly contested game.
