Exclusives (part 3:Microsoft)

Now time to talk about the big elephant in the room, Microsoft. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is arguably the most popular console this generation, and it does so with hardly any exclusives. Not to say that it is devoid of good games, or exclusives at all, but that it has far fewer than the other two.
The 360 does not have the best, nor the worst hardware this generation, but it has full HD capabilities and on the slim modes it has HDMi output. Like earlier stated, this is arguably the most popular home console and so it is also arguably the most played on system out of all the others currently. This does not provide the pinnacle of quality of graphics that is available, but rather is the most frequented online. Also hopping onto the motion control band-wagon, the Xbox has the Kinect, which is a redone webcam to "monitor" movements and recognize voices (more on the Kinect later). So we have middle-of-the-pack visuals, but the most popular console.
Okay, now on to the other half. Ask anyone who has an Xbox 360 what their favourite exclusive game for their Xbox is. Chances are they will have one right away. As for the general public they will know more than what is on the PlayStation 3. Almost everyone know about Halo, Fable, Gears of War, and the first Mass Effect game, so it has far more name recognition than Sony does with the general public. However, they have hardly anything that is truly exclusively for Microsoft. With such a small list of game developers that work under Microsoft exclusively they have to have an in-house source for games. They do, but currently they are working on Kinect games and allowing their other companies to manufacture other games. It seems that Microsoft is not as concerned with making alliances with game studios, and that they are perfectly content with having other consoles have a game that they have as well (to an extent). I assume that this is because the 360 is the most popular, so it would be inconsequential if they lost a few games to another console. What is exclusive to Xbox 360 though is some very entertaining games and some of the very best experiences that can be had on the console.
Like I stated in my earlier two posts, when you have good exclusives people will buy non-exclusives for that console too, simply out of habit. There are of course other ways to keep a customer coming back for more, but this is one of the simplest ways. The exclusives are really great games that keep customers coming back for more, and the non-exclusives are great games too. Microsoft is the most popular, but if it wants to continue its dominance then it would have to: get more companies to make games exclusively for their console, and/or make an even more powerful console. I am not saying that it is doing things wrong, but when it comes to exclusives Microsoft has the weakest game; but the few that it does are some great games.
