The reigning NBA champions are still the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. After the month of November, the Boston Celtics racked up 16-2 record and is currently on an 8-game winning run at months end.

Paul Pierce hangs tough for a lay-up.

The Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are back to defend the title and aims to accomplish something that no Celtic team has done in the last 40 years: Win back-to-back championships.

Standing-wise they are off to a great start pretty much like the same that they had last year en route to the championship. They first faced off with Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in their home opener right after receiving the championship rings and raising championship banner no.17 up the rafters of the TD Banknorth Garden. The Celtics came away with a 90-85 win to kick off their title retention bid. They have also played the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors twice each and won all of those games.

The Celtics employ their trademark stifling defense to dominate opponents holding everybody else down to league best averages of 90.1ppg allowed and 40.8% field goal shooting allowed. Considering that they aren’t really one of the top offensive juggernauts in the league, their superiority on the defensive end has been their main weapon even from last year.

Boston is a modest 14th overall in scoring at 98.2ppg. Garnett (16.1ppg), Pierce (18.4ppg), and Allen (17.6ppg) are their main producers on offense but it has been pretty much a team effort when it comes to putting the ball in the basket. Rajon Rondo has been on a tear lately showing his newfound capability as a scoring threat by using his speed. The same goes for Tony Allen, Leon Powe, Eddie House, and Kendrick Perkins who has supplied great support by logging in quality minutes.

The level of the Celtics’ offense is surely not in the level of the more high-powered attacks in the league. Outside of the Big Three, there isn’t one player that can be considered as a marquee-type of guy. Head coach Doc Rivers makes do with what he had last year, which proved to be cohesive and effective, who were the same support crew that he has until now. Some of the other players who won a championship with them last year decided to move somewhere else (James Posey) or just retired (P.J. Brown).

Knowing that the Celtics offense is probably average at least compared to the rest of the field, it is still understandable that they are the NBA Champions because of their top notch defensive game, terrific work ethic, and the desire that they bring to the table everytime they take to the hardwood.

Kevin Garnett pulls down a rebound.

There is just no question when it comes to defense when we talk about the Celtics. Of course, the focal point is the Defensive Player of the Year Kevin Garnett. Looking at his numbers, it appears that he is still as versatile as ever with averages of 8.5rpg (20th best), 1.4bpg (11th best), and 1.1spg all on the defensive end.

Other notable defensive players in Boston includes center Kendrick Perkins and Rajon Rondo. Perkins may not be the certified inside scorer as a starter but he sure has put work in when it comes to doing the dirty job. It won him a championship last season and he’d surely be as happy to do it again. Perkins is the Celtics’ offensive rebounding leader with 2.4 a game. His 7.6rpg average is 27th best in the league and he is also the 4th best shot blocker with 2.1bpg. Rondo meanwhile is doing his damage with serious hustle from the perimeter and disrupting passing lanes with a league 4th best 2.2spg average not to mention that he also contributes 6.9apg 8th best in the league.

The Boston Celtics are truly defensive oriented in style of play. They rely first on their defense and lets their execution on offense come naturally with the right rhythm and cohesion. Don’t expect too many high scoring games from the champs because they prefer to grind down their opponents by limiting the other team’s production and to control the tempo with the way that they liked it to be.

Winning it all last season was all that mattered then. This time, the Celtics will attempt to rewrite history. It’s much more difficult this time around because, being the champs, all the other teams are locked on them. Nevertheless, it remains a fact that it will not be easy to dethrone the Boston Celtics.

Mavericks Making Up For Lost Time

November 27th 2008 10:46
The Dallas Mavericks has finally shown up.

Dirk Nowitzki and company rattled off FIVE straight wins to get themselves to .500 for the first time this season after a horrendous 2-7 start. Their current resurgence brought back some of the atmosphere of the familliarly competitive Western Conference, and at 7-7, they are right back into the thick of things in the very competitive Southwest Division.

Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks are hanging in there.

Obviously, the Mavericks appeared to have struggled early on especially at their home floor. Their first home win was against the Memphis Grizzlies via a 91-76 rout. It happened on November 21 days before the season completed its first whole month.

We can also sight the breaking in of a new system brought about by the hiring of new head coach Rick Carlisle who encountered a lot of really tough bumps along the way when it comes to getting early wins this season.

As we all know, the Mavericks are pretty well stuck with its all-or-nothing, make-or-break line-up composed of core players Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, and Josh Howard (currently injured). It is just right that they make haste before time runs out on all of them. Their current winning streak proves that they are still capable of winning and making it to the playoffs.

They also have some commendable young talent just like Antoine Wright who stepped up in lieu of the sidelined Josh Howard. Wright got a career-high 24 points in their recent win against the Indiana Pacers. Other young talent in the Dallas bench includes Gerald Green and Brandon Bass. Knowing the advanced age of most of their marquee players, it is very important that these young guys should chip in considerable contributions.

Let's take a game by game look at their 5-game winning run.

November 16: Mavericks 124 New York Knicks 114 OT

How to shake off the hex of consecutive losses? GUT IT OUT!!!

November 18: Mavericks 100 Charlotte Bobcats 83

The monkey should have been off the Mavs' backs so they came up with this heckuva rout.

November 19: Mavericks 96 Houston Rockets 86

Jason Terry was just on fire in this one. Howard's absence didn't mattered but Yao Ming's did the Rockets in.

November 21: Memphis Grizzlies 76 Mavericks 91

Its just about time to bring the home crowd into it. This home win may have come a little delayed but its a good thing that it finally happened.

November 25: Indiana Pacers 106 Mavericks 109

Close shave... the Pacers can compete with anybody in the league it would really be frustrating to be beaten by them considering that they aren't really considered a playoff team in any standards.

What's With The Wizards!?

November 25th 2008 06:48
In the last playoffs, the Washington Wizards were right there rivalling the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs as if they were capable of supplanting Lebron James and company. As it turned out, the Wizard looked more like a pretender trying to match-up with a better team.

Nothing to take away from the Wizards though, they showed a lot of toughness despite the injuries to main man Gilbert Arenas and the occasional absences of other key players to continue winning to stay in the hunt and still made it to the playoffs.

Wizards' Caron Butler (right) contests the loose ball with the Kings' Beno Udrih

This season is pretty much the same considering Arenas is still out after having his third left knee operation in the last 1 and a half years stating that his probable return would be on January. The Wizards stumbled to an 0-5 start just like last season when they rebounded with six straight wins after that and the Wizards were playoff contenders and looking to advance.

This season is also different considering that all their blabber about still being capable of coming from a horrendous 0-5 start were all just a bunch of bull!

“No. Never. There’s too many games,” said leading scorer Caron Butler, “If we were at this point a month from now and I’m saying, ‘Hey, we’re 0-20,’ I would tell you, ‘Yeah.’ I couldn’t be as positive as I am right now.”

Butler said that when they were 0-3. That is what we would call complacency.

Antawn Jamison is also another guy who cant think straight about their team's current situation.

“This is something that is unacceptable and something we can’t tolerate at all. … We’re going over what we need to do in the morning and we get out on the court and we don’t do it,” Jamison said. “Nothing is missing. Nothing is missing at all. It’s guys just not getting it done.”

Nothing is missing? C'mon Antawn! Where the hell on the floor is Gilbert and Brendan?

A lot of crap also is the 'supposed' fact that the Wizards are used to playing without Gilbert Arenas. Another stupid assumption. Everytime a team plays without their star player, that team is automatically put at a disadvantage. Last season, they got away with it but this time around... they're looking more like fools making believe that they are just as good as last year even without Arenas.

Brendan Haywood is out too forcing Etan Thomas to start in his place at the start of the season. The youthful and potential-filled JaVale McGee is also waiting in the wings to show his stuff and eventually start.

Without Arenas they don't have any threat at point guard. The rest of the league just got better this year. Thinking that they can pull off another Cinderella run is just wishful thinking.

After 5 straight losses, the Wizards finally got a win against the Utah Jazz at home. Butler was actually treating the win like a championship game won taking off his jersey and going nuts.

“King Kong was on my back. Throw the jersey off. Sigh of relief,” he said.

Well King Kong just hopped on the Wizards' back once again. After that lone win, they once again found themselves venturing on another 5-game losing streak. Their latest was a 122-117 loss to the trade-depleted New York Knicks.

Wizards team president Ernie Grunfeld was so pissed he fired head coach Eddie Jordan... There goes the head.

Oh. Before that, Arenas just got himself waxed in D.C. serving as a tribute to him by the community where he plays for. Right now, he ain't doing that. Agent Zero... of course... zero games!

Arenas said that if ever his team ends up in last place it will be a great benefit for the team. Quitting now huh Gilbert? Purposely sending his team right into the lottery. How pathetic!

The Washington Wizards in all of its entirety is running like a headless chicken these days. Its top players obviously clueless and frustrated and the management began the blaming game by hammering on the easiest guy to blame: the head coach.

What now Mr. Grunfeld? What now?

There has been a lot of noise going on lately about the possibility that Lebron James will be a Knickerbocker in 2010. Teasers such as Lebron's presence in a New York Yankees game to a future Nike sneaker named "Lebron Yankees" are just some of the ongoing hints that James will be playing in the Big Apple two years from now.

But hints are hints. We will all never know until the fat lady sings on the matter as far as James is concerned

New York Wants Lebron James

November 23rd 2008 06:12
Looks like the New York Knicks have formally joined the Lebron James sweepstakes in 2010. Trading their top two scorers to open up a huge cap room has confirmed it.

The Knicks traded Zach Randolph and Jamal Crawford in separate deals just recently and acquired Tim Thomas, Mike D'Antoni's former player in Phoenix; Al Harrington, GM Donnie Walsh's prized find at Indiana; and Cuttino Mobley a veteran guard who can give fair contribution offensively

Since the Dallas Mavericks settled with a veteran point guard in Jason Kidd, their future star at that position went to the New Jersey Nets.

Devin Harris is on his fifth year as a pro and he has already realized how to get along with how the NBA handles its business after getting traded from Dallas in the last mid-season

Dallas Made A Big Mistake!

November 18th 2008 07:46
We all remember that Jason Kidd trade made by the Dallas Mavericks and the New Jersey Nets. If we are not mistaken, that deal was done for the primary reason that the Mavs are making that one big move to finally win it all and the Nets are letting go of a player that is in discontent.

Fast forward to the future, we have Kidd scratching his head on the way out of the floor. He was wondering how on earth him and the Mavs ended up reeling to five straight losses. On the other hand here we have Devin Harris, the young talent that the Mavs gave up on last season, blasting away against the Atlanta Hawks with back-to-back 30 points plus games in back-to-back wins

The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic didn't actually enjoyed stong openings in their respective campaigns to kick off this season. But things are surely picking up for the two Eastern Conference playoff contenders.

It was just a matter of time before these two teams rack up winning streaks to prove their billing

How Good are the Atlanta Hawks?

November 8th 2008 17:00
Let's face it. We never really knew where the Hawks were coming from.

Atlanta (4-0) had just recently blew out the Toronto Raptors (110-82) who joined the other three playoff teams (Orlando, Philadelphia, and New Orleans) that fell prey to the Hawks early this season
