Altered History -- A Look at What Could Happen
September 10th 2006 01:02
An alternate universe novel explores what our world might be like if an important event in history was changed or didn't happen. What would our world be like if Germany, Italy, and Japan won WWII? What if Columbus didn't discover America? If you give any writer an assignment and tell them they have to write about, let's say the Crusades, and change the outcome of this event for their story, every story would be different. This is what I find so fascinating about these stories.
Andre Norton wrote the first alternate universe story I read. In fact, she wrote the first SciFi book I ever read. She introduced me to SciFi and I still read and enjoy SciFi and Fantasy. I'm always looking for new authors to enjoy. I hope you'll share with me the authors you've read and liked. I'm hoping to have a discussion about the authors and their books.
I chose this topic for my blog because I can no longer read normal sized print for any length of time and I'd still like to learn about what is happening in my favorite worlds. S. M. Stirling has a new story in his series about what happens when gunpowder no longer explodes, electricity no longer works, cars no longer run, and airplanes no longer fly. What do you think would happen?
L. E. Modesitt, Jr. pictured a world without mechanical aids like cars, watches, or computers. He imagined what would happen if a woman from our world was torn from her world, placed in a world where magic actually worked, and had to contend with all the changes to her way of life. She also had to contend with assassins, kings, horses, and a man she loved.
Eric Flint uprooted a small town in West Virginia and sent it back into the middle of the 100 Years War in Germany. The story is about the changes that their presence makes in how the people of that time saw their world, the changes the town had to make, and of course a love interest or two or three.
Anne McCaffrey started her alternate history series with the premise a machine was invented that could prove the existence of paranormal powers, the trials of those who are different to gain acceptance, and of course a love interest here and there. I like all of her series and look forward to reading all the twists and turns her stories take.
Mercedes Lackey is another author that I really like, and I was thinking that her series about magic in our world was an alternate universe series, but now that I think about it, it would probably be considered urban legend or just plain fantacy. The Fire Rose and The Firebird are a couple of my favorite books by her. She's known mostly for the Valdemar series, but she writes many good books.
I know there are other authors that you like, and I would like to know who they are and what you like about their stories.
