ENDANGERED SPECIES OF INDIA

Wild life conservation is the very important concerns throughout the world. Especially in INDIA it’s a must since many of the species are in the danger of extinction. So its every individuals duty to know about these “ENDANGERED SPECIES” and also their habits and habitats, so that preservation of these species can be done with utmost care. Here are some of the Endangered Species and their details and in the end there is a link where you can contribute to the Preservation of Wildlife in whatever modes you want. So have knowledge about these species first:

• MACACA SILENUS:

Common Name: Lion tailed Macque.

Local Name: Hind-siah Bunder, Nellamanthi, Karungkorungoo, Arakkan.
Size: Head and Body – 20 to 24 inches. Tail – 10 to 15 inches. Females are slightly smaller.
Distribution: Western Ghats from North Kanara, southwards to Kerala and Kanyakumari district, Tamilnadu.
Distinctive Characters: Great mane of long dark grey or brownish grey hair from temple and cheek. Glossy black coat.
Habits: They are dark colored, shy and seclusive in habit. They are seldom seen. Macaques are gregarious. They live in herds of 12 to 20 or more. The call of the male resembles that of human voice – “COYEH” or the “COO” of the pigeon. Their movements through the treetops are slow and deliberate. Trees are the means of transport and form habitat of this species. Destruction of habitats and poaching are the threats to this species. Hence afforestation and the prevention of poaching are the methods to save this species.


• CAPROLAGUS HISPIDUS:

Common Name: Hispid Hare or Assam rabbit..
Size: They are the same size of the hare with a shorter, dark-brown tail.
Distribution: Terai, dooars and Himalayan foothills.

Distinctive Characters: The fur is coarse and is made of dark-brown bristles which are paler on the under surface of the body. The outer side of ear is brown. The eyes are smaller. Hind legs are short and stout. Their claws are long and teeth are large.
Habits: They feed on bark and roots. Nothing much is known about their threats.



• PLATANISTA INDI:

Common Name: Indus Dolphin.
Distribution: Ganges, Brahmaputra, Indus and other tributaries to the bases of hills.
Distinctive Characters: They are seen within tidal limits but do not enter the sea. Its body oil is used for burning lamps and various other purposes.



• VIVERRA MEGASPILA:

Common Name: Malabar large spotted Civet.
Distribution: Malabar and Travancore.
Distinctive Characters: It lives in the wooded plains and adjoining hill slopes. They are nearly to extinct.


• SUS SULVANIUS:

Common Name: Pygmy Hog.
Size: They are scarcely 10 inches high.
Distribution: Forests of Himalayas in Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan and Assam.
Distinctive Characters: They live in herds of 5 to 20. They are nocturnal in nature. And rarely seen.
