The title

December 1st 2009 03:53
There were two reasons why I chose the title A shadow of herself. Firstly, due to dementia my mother has lost most of her memory and personality, and secondly she has also lost weight.

She doesn't remember that she's got children. I tell her that I'm her daughter, but I'm not sure that she understands. So I remind her often about what her pregnancy was like with me, hoping that will trigger something.

My mother wasn't expecting me to born in two months early, she thought the pressure she felt after a long walk meant that she needed to go to the toilet. I always like to remind her how she thought I was pooh! That always gets a smile and laugh, even if she doesn't remember the incident.

I get very excited when she still remembers her name. I'm not so excited when she doesn't remember mine, oh well ... she often says she loves me, so it doesn't get any better than that.

Feeding her can be difficult. For some reason she doesn't like opening her mouth. She'll open her lips and keep her teeth clenched. Or I'll get the spoon a fraction of the way into her mouth and she'll clamp down on it. I end up eating more and more, and I'm ever expanding ... she's a shadow of herself.

About me

November 24th 2009 04:35
I'm a full-time carer for my mother. My mother has severe dementia. It was undiagnosed for quite a few years, even though we had visited different gp's for general check-ups. And she was being seen by a neurologist, about another health problem. My friends thought she had dementia, but somehow the fully trained general practitioners we visited just couldn't spot it.

Five years I've been caring for my mum, without a break. The internet is my stress buster. It allows me to stay at home and care for her, and still stay in contact with the outside world. Mum is with me 24/7, and the internet is online 24/7. Any time I need to wind down from the stress of caregiving, I get on the internet and play a game or express an opinion.

So I decided to start a blog and share my joys and frustrations with you all.

I enjoyed this film and have watched it several times. It's light-hearted, a little stupid in parts, and it made me laugh and smile and feel good. I love the song at the end.

Wyle Coyote is a definite favourite. And the Tasmanian Devil. How about poor Sylvester who never got to eat Tweety Pie? lol Can you tell I'm a fan of Warner Bros cartoons

I've started ordering groceries online. Woolworths does a decent job of selecting and packing, and I pay by mobile EFTPOS. I still need to go out for some things, but I'm grateful that the Woolworths staff take care of the bulk of our shopping.

Hi, will you also be looking at games on the internet such as Bejewelled or Mahjong, etc?

I love those puzzle games and have bought a few from PopCap and through About.com which sells Oberon games (if I remember correctly).
