The title

There were two reasons why I chose the title A shadow of herself. Firstly, due to dementia my mother has lost most of her memory and personality, and secondly she has also lost weight.
She doesn't remember that she's got children. I tell her that I'm her daughter, but I'm not sure that she understands. So I remind her often about what her pregnancy was like with me, hoping that will trigger something.
My mother wasn't expecting me to born in two months early, she thought the pressure she felt after a long walk meant that she needed to go to the toilet. I always like to remind her how she thought I was pooh! That always gets a smile and laugh, even if she doesn't remember the incident.
I get very excited when she still remembers her name. I'm not so excited when she doesn't remember mine, oh well ... she often says she loves me, so it doesn't get any better than that.
Feeding her can be difficult. For some reason she doesn't like opening her mouth. She'll open her lips and keep her teeth clenched. Or I'll get the spoon a fraction of the way into her mouth and she'll clamp down on it. I end up eating more and more, and I'm ever expanding ... she's a shadow of herself.
