Life's too short not to have fun, so make sure it is. And remember, 'it's all good'!

About Me And Sydney Table
I'm a student, who enjoys long walks on the beach and candlelit dinners... Now that's all well and good (Is it really?) but what I see you want to know is "what's going on here?"
Well what we're basically all about are reviews of good restaurants, cafes and other places to eat; what's good and where it is. So you're able to make an informed choice when you want to go out, with quality and value as the emphasis. And what do all these buzz words mean in practice? Well you'll just have to tune in to find out...
Rocky's Running Diary
This is a diary of my training and racing. I'm a cross country and athletics runner for the Randwick Botany Harriers (Athletics Club) and on occasion for NSW. I train with Sean Williams' squad. Running plays a major part in my life, and has given me all sorts of opportunities for which I'm really thankful.
I'll be using this blog as a sort of training diary, so you'll be able to follow the day's training blow by blow.

My Current PBs:
800m - 2.12
1500m - 4.30
3000m - 9.46
5000m - 17.21
10000m - 36.00
Queens Park 6k XC - 20.53
NSW AllSchools State Cross Country 2005 U20s - 26th
National Cross Country 2006 U20s - 49th

This is by far the best fried chicken in the world. Period. Not that I'm an authority, but seriously, there's no competition.

Unfortunately there's just one hitch. It's in Bangkok.

Anyway, the place is called Soi Polo Fried Chicken, (here's another good review) and they also do mean Isaan specialties. Like som tum, and yum plaa duk fuu, deep fried catfish shards with green mango salad. Recipe here.

But obviously the best thing here is the fried chicken, and that delectable topping, crisp fried garlic. Mmmmmm. It's so juicy, with crispy fatty skin, fantastic. And two good chilli sauces to go with it, a clear sweet one, and a dark thick salty one. Pour some on your sticky rice. You did order sticky rice, didn't you?

If you make it to Bangkok, make sure you eat here. It's one of the best restaurants in the city.

Cafe Q Burger

March 1st 2007 00:33
469 Bronte Rd Bronte 2024 - 9369 5673

The burgers at Cafe Q are really really good! That's the general gist here. The beef especially, a really savoury tasty pattie, house made with capsicum and tomato in it, is fantastic. In a buger with salty grilled eggplant, tomato and lettuce, ricotta, and pesto. The pesto really makes it. I can't stress this enough, eat this burger!
In fact, I'm starting to get the feeling that almost everything at Cafe Q is really delicious...

Benzin

February 26th 2007 00:51
480 Crown St Surry Hills 2010 - 9360 5546

Benzin is one of many offshoots of Sailors Thai; David Thompson's restaurant which was spawned from the famous Darley Street Thai has borne many children, including Sailors Thai Canteen, Oceanic Thai, a proposed new venue in Potts Point; and Benzin. Benzin is in the spot where Fuel used to be, and still has a showroom around it. It has a nice open kitchen, but not many tables, and it's a little daunting to be seated amoungst so few tables huddled to one side of such a large room, and being almost pushed onto the footpath. Interspersing tables between the cars, using the entire room, and closing the front windows that face onto the street, would be a good idea. No one wants to eat on Crown Steet. Anyway, the food is definitely sofisticated Thai, with refined flavours, and makes full use of textures. Although it's very expensive for Thai food, there are some very interesting, different, and exciting dishes. Sorry, some of the photos are blurred.

Flavours of Thai, at The Spot

February 22nd 2007 00:24
39 Perouse Rd Randwick 2031 - (02) 9398 4599

Having just been to dinner around The Spot (you know, that place in Randwick where The Ritz is) and inspecting what looked good, I can say that Flavours of Thai definitely looks interesting. We ended up going to Chaopraya which we didn't like at all, but should have gone to Flavours instead. Now I'm just going on the menu here cos I haven't eaten there, but I definitely will when I can. Looks more modern, but I respect them for having some more unusual dishes on offer. When I go I'll be trying the crispy fish salad, roast eggplant salad, pad prik gang, and hor mok.

Specc Cafe and Restaurant

February 21st 2007 00:35
344 Clovelly Rd Clovelly 2031 - (02) 9664 7888

Specc is a modern cafe/restaurant in Clovelly, in a nice modern set up. It's a front room with a semi-open kitchen lining the back wall, and the waiters are all very friendly. And as a bonus, it's in the Entertainment Book. The food is a modern mix, heavily meat based, but with Euro flavours. Costs $50 a person for 3 courses, but very good quality.

The Paddngton Inn bistro is closed for a while, for renovations. Damn shame; hopefully it will open soon. Anyway, just a heads up.

Ristorante Martnelli

February 16th 2007 06:32

Canberra restaurant, fantastic food, but unbelievably shocking service. There is one guy doing the whole room, and organising bread, and helping in the kitchen. They're short on menus so it takes half an our for us to see one, another 15 before we can order.; Then an hour and a half between entrees and mains. We've had two courses and we've been there for over three hours. We were so bored we tried to go around the neighbourhood to find a pack of cards to play with. But by that time at night the all night store next door was closed. So we took inventive photos of our empty plates from the entrees, which were still on there an hour after we finished eating

Looks really good, a very different place!
Really like the job you're doing here! But it would be great to see some pictures of the food you ordered? Would make it more tantalising!

I've been here a number of times, and it's great, if a little expensive. The szechuan eggplant is fantastic, as is the salt and pepper pranws or cauliflower.

No, that place looks pretty ordinary and expensive, so I haven't been there. I do really mean Cafe Q, it's next door I think, but completely different. And a whole lot better.

Yeah recent, not sure why he didn't liked it. I think they've been breaking in a new chef, but I still find it the best cheap pub steak. Haven't been to Paddington Arms, though.

on Fekerte's Ethiopian Cuisine

January 20th 2007 02:36
Dude, chill out!

Who said poor people don't eat good food?? The best food in the world comes from poorer communities having to make do with what they have. There are countless examples, my favourite being the wonderful food of Isaan in Thailand; but for example the whole idea of slow cooking, braising and stewing wouldn't exist otherwise - they were invented as a means of tenderising and making the most out of tough meat by farmers.

As for the Ethiopian example, I don't pretend to know that much about Ethiopian food, I'll be the first one to say I've never eaten it before. But because of my interest in running, I've read a bit about what people in Ethiopia eat, and I know there is a sizeable vegetarian proportion. Thats not to say they don't eat mea; but the menu at this restaurant was certainly not representative of the proportion of meat to vegetarian, as far as i understand it. Thats all im saying. And they certainly dont east as much meat as people do in Aus, and im just saying a restaurant in Aus may be influenced by that, as the people they're feeding are Australian.

So relax!

If you've got something interesting to add, then it'd be great to hear another opinion, but save your little over-the-top unnecessary rant for somewhere else.

No its near charing cross, its in bronte, on macpherson street, across the road is the other good restaurant in Bronte: the wet paint cafe. It seems like a nice place to eat, if a little original in its menu and thus the prices seem to be too high. But thats the problem with contemporary sydney restaurants

the prices are a little asking for the quantity of food that you get but the flavours are good enough to make this, a special treat restaurant.
