Etihad Airways today announced that it will feature Masdar City, one of the world’s most sustainable cities, as part of its new ‘Essential Abu Dhabi’ on-line travel guide, which is designed to provide business and leisure travellers with important information regarding the emirate as a destination.

James Hogan, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways, said: “We are privileged to feature an organisation such as Masdar, which represents Abu Dhabi’s vision for a renewable and sustainable future as an essential, ‘can’t miss’ destination.

“Masdar has made significant progress, reflecting the government’s commitment to clean energy and economic diversification. Business and leisure travellers worldwide will be interested in this important story and we are pleased to help promote this organisation and the values it stands for to visitors in Abu Dhabi.”

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, said: “Masdar City is proud to be featured as part of ‘Essential Abu Dhabi’ in this partnership with Etihad Airways. Masdar City is open to the public to experience. We encourage visitors to see how future cities will be built and managed. We are grateful to Etihad for this collaboration and applaud them for also working with Masdar on a variety of initiatives to be a sustainable airline.”

An Abu Dhabi Government initiative, Masdar City has made rapid progress since 2006. The Masdar City site currently hosts six buildings including research laboratories, classrooms and residential space that are completed and operational. There are also restaurants, banking services, an organic supermarket and other innovations at the site. The exciting Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system is popular as it offers a potential glimpse into the future of transportation.

The residential quarters of the complex use 51 per cent less energy than average buildings in the UAE, and 54 percent less water. Around 30 per cent of the campus’s energy is provided by solar panels on the roof, with 75 percent of hot water also being heated by the sun.

Designed to enhance Abu Dhabi’s place as a top tourism and ‘meetings incentives conferences and exhibitions’ (MICE) destination, the campaign features a dedicated website – essentialabudhabi.com – backed with brochures featuring the exclusive offers on board all Etihad aircraft.
Hotels, tour operators, dining outlets, shops, adventure parks, cultural attractions and sports facilities are providing a range of offers to entice tourists and business travellers, to spend time in Abu Dhabi with a wide range of discount offers and deals.

With less than a fortnight to go before the royal wedding, hoteliers’ hopes of 100% occupancy appear to have been dashed, with dozens of properties still touting for business and some even cutting their prices to woo visitors. Room rates at the Lancaster London hotel have been slashed from £209 to £169, and there’s still availability at the K West Hotel & Spa, the Bermondsey Square Hotel, the Cadogan Hotel and One Aldwych.

There’s also room at Grosvenor House, The May Fair and The Cavendish, which has cut its prices by 25%, while the listings site Hotels.com has 71 properties within half a mile of Piccadilly with rooms unsold.

Londoners hoping to cash in on royal-wedding fever are also disappointed. The listings sites Gumtree.com and Londonrentmyhouse.com have more than 600 properties between them that remain on the books.

According to Edward Turner, who is trying to let a three-bedroom flat in Earls Court through airbnb.com, the reported rush for London properties is all hype. “I dropped the price to £1,500 for 12 nights to close the deal, but I’ve had nothing,” he said.

Heathrow has imposed a new contract on airlines that absolves the airport of liability if something goes wrong — as it did with the snow chaos in December.

The new “conditions of use” contract has infuriated airlines who believe that BAA, which owns Heathrow, is tightening its liability cover after being caught out last year.

Heavy snow before Christmas led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and caused travel chaos, leading to calls for compensation from airlines.

They are washing their hands of any responsibility even if they mess things up,

In last year’s conditions of use contract, the liabilities section covered just one paragraph. It stated that BAA would not be liable for damage to aircraft operating at Heathrow unless it was done with “intent” or caused by the “reckless” actions of its staff.

This year’s contract has expanded the liabilities section to three paragraphs and is far broader in scope, covering all events. It states: “Neither we nor our employees ... shall have any liability to you or be obliged to indemnify you in respect of any actual or expected indirect or consequential losses, loss of profits, loss of revenue, loss of goodwill, loss of opportunity, or loss of business, increased costs or expenses or wasted expenditure or any other injury, loss, damage, claim, cost or expense caused by any act, omission, neglect or default of ours.”

BAA will only be liable in the event of a death caused by negligence, fraud or aircraft damage caused by intent or recklessness.

“They are washing their hands of any responsibility even if they mess things up,” one airline executive said.

Mendalimos www.mendalimos.com. This neighbourhood bar, run by a few savvy twentysomethings, could be someone’s flat, only it’s busier and located just across the road from the illustrious A-list Dan Hotel (see Where to Stay). Cut through the cosy wooden sliver of a bar, and take a breather in the cute courtyard behind.
