NBA or MBA?

October 12th 2010 02:06
As far as I know, the National Basketball Association hasn't changed it's name or logo, though since this summer, it could probably get away with calling itself Miami's Basketball Association.

Since Chris Bosh and LeBron James decided to pack their bags, head for South Beach, FL, and share the spotlight with Dwyane Wade, there has been a lot of hype regarding the 2010-2011 season for the Miami Heat, and rightfully so.

With three of the NBA's best players all wearing the same uniform, it is hard to ignore the achievements that the Heat could reach this season, barring any injuries or locker room problems.

But is it really necessary for all the hoopla? I mean, there are still 29 other teams in the league.

Recently, ESPN has thought it necessary to devote an entire page to the Miami Heat and their "adventures" this season.

The website is titled "Heat Index."

Are there going to be any new developments or adventures that are going to occur rather than spectacular basketball?

Maybe I am in the dark on this one, but if I am right, the Heat will play 82 games this season. Assuming they have a record better than seven other teams in the Eastern Conference, they will continue to play in the postseason.

And maybe, if they beat everyone in the Eastern Conference playoff bracket, they will make the NBA Finals.

If they beat the Western Conference opponent, they will be champions of the basketball world!

Well, no matter what, there will be an NBA champion this year, just like every year before and every year in the past.

Maybe James, Bosh and Wade are planning on doing a puppet show at half time. Maybe Pat Riley is going to dress like a showgirl and shimmy down a rope that dangles from the giant scoreboard at center court. Maybe the Heat will bring in a three-ringed circus to play against its competition for a half every home game.

But I don't think any of these things are going to happen.

I don't understand why this type of coverage is needed.

If it is, why wasn't their a "Bulls Rodeo" page when Michael Jordan won six titles. Or even a page for the Lakers when they won three consecutive titles, which, by the way, they are on track to do again if they can bring home the trophy this season.

There is nothing that is so spectacular that needs this type of coverage in any sport, anywhere.

I must say, for the sake of NBA fans of other teams, I hope the Heat fail to reach the goals that so many think they will achieve. Especially the major sports networks such as ESPN.

If they don't win it all, it will only prove that there was nothing more than basketball being played in the city of Miami during this season.

Just out of curiosity, if the Heat do fail to win it all, will their be an "Air Conditioned" page for us to reminisce on their failures?

Michigan State routs Wolverines

October 12th 2010 01:31
In a battle of two Big Ten unbeatens, Michigan State was able to bottle up Denard Robinson, relatively speaking, and hand its in-state rival its first setback of the season, 34-17.

Robinson was held to nearly 100 yards less than his rushing per game average in Saturday's contest, as Sparty contained Robinson to just 84 yards on the ground.

The passing game for Robinson, wasn't much better.

Though he passed for 215 yards and a touchdown in the game, the Spartan defense forced three interceptions to keep the Michigan offense off the field and as ineffective as it has been all season.

On the other side of the ball, Michigan State's offense continued to stay unbelievably balanced while the Wolverine defense continued to struggle.

The green and white totaled 536 yards, with 249 by ground and 287 by air.

Sophomore running back Edwin Baker led the Spartans on the ground, earning 147 yards on 22 carries and a Touchdown in Michigan State's win.

MSU's Kirk Cousins continued to play flawless, throwing 18/25 for 284 yards a touchdown and no interceptions.

Michigan State improves to 6-0 on the season, with two of it's biggest wins coming in the opening weeks of conference play.

The Spartans will host Illinois (3-2) next week and try to continue an impressive run at the Big Ten title.

Battered Boilers win conference opener

October 12th 2010 01:15
Sometimes, one of the most important things relating to a team's success is scheduling.

After a bye week last Saturday, an injury-plagued Boilermaker squad was able to work on the basics, adjust the offense, get new and inexperienced players ready, and finally, get healthy.

Danny Hope's squad took full advantage of their scheduled bye week and played an impressive game against #25 Northwestern, winning 20-17 in the Boilers' conference opener.

Two weeks ago, Purdue saw it's starting quarterback, Robert Marve, stumble to a season ending ACL tear against Toledo, leaving true Freshman Robert Marve at the helm of the Boilermaker offense.

After a tough fight, the Boilermakers eventually lost to the Rockets, dropping their record to 2-2.

Before a very important conference game in Evanston, the Boilers would be able to heal their wounds, at least shortly, before they would travel to Northwestern and battle the unbeaten Wildcats.

During the bye week, however, Gary Nord, Purdue's offensive coordinator, would have to look to his bench again after wide receiver Justin Siller suffered a foot injury, leaving him sidelined for 2-4 weeks.

The Boilers' downward spiral turned the other direction, however, after the big win in Evanston.

Rob Henry showed his athleticism, leading Purdue's offense in rushing with 132 yards on 16 carries, including a monstrous 67 yard run in the first quarter against the Wildcat defense.

Henry only threw for 47 total yards, but his arm wasn't needed in the Boilers victory.

Purdue is now 1-0 in the conference with a likely chance to improve to 2-0 next week when a less-than-impressive Minnesota squad comes to West Lafayette for Homecoming.

Purdue hasn't started 2-0 in conference play since Kyle Orton headed the Purdue offense in 2004.

Wade injured: Heat roll

October 6th 2010 14:39
If you didn't believe that LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade were serious about joining forces to make a title run, your doubts became reality on Tuesday night.

In what has been the most anticipated preseason opening game in the NBA's history, James, Bosh, and Wade took the court and didn't disappoint the Heat faithful

Traditionally, the Bears wear dark navy and orange uniforms when they take the field on Sunday's. They entered New Meadowland Stadium in New York wearing their same, Chicago Bears colors.

When they headed into the locker room for halftime, however, the Bears were turned black and blue, compliments of the New York Giants defense

Big Ten's week one answers

October 4th 2010 18:57
Several questions lingered in the atmosphere leading up to the Big Ten Conference's opening week of play. Some of those questions were answered and, after Saturday night came to an end, different questions arose.

With some very important games in the opening week of conference play, it was important for serious contenders to get off to a hot start if they wanted to be in Rose Bowl talks at the end of the season

Big Ten season kicks off

October 1st 2010 17:56
With most of the non-conference games on the shelf, the Big Ten season will begin this Saturday with a plethora of intriguing match-ups.

Six conference teams remain unbeaten after the first four weeks of the season. Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Northwestern all sit atop the conference standings at 4-0, while the Big Ten's only other undefeated squad, Indiana, is 3-0

NFL week 4 picks

October 1st 2010 15:44
Last week I was able to get back on the right track with an above .500 prediction percentage as I finished the week 9-7. That improves my record to 26-22 on the season.

There are still a few surprises thus far in the NFL season. The Bears are still undefeated, even if they depend on crucial mistakes of other teams

The ex-Cleveland Cavalier hero and superstar LeBron James fully believes that some of the negative backlash and media coverage of his decision to sign with the Miami Heat was race related.

Yeah, right

For the past couple years, the discussion of a playoff system in college football has been at the forefront of fixing a flawed BCS system.

This season seems to present some of the most valid arguments for such a system, and it hasn't been coming from the mouths of egotistical radio talk show hosts, frustrated coaches, or even the wise college football analysts of ESPN such as Lou Holtz or Mark May

on NBA or MBA?

Those are some very interesting points that you mention, but, for now, I think the future of the NBA lies with the performance of the Miami Heat. If these three superstars can't get the job done, I believe that many players will look at the this and understand that there is such a thing as "too much of a good thing." If the Heat run the table these next few years, however, areas like Los Angeles, Boston, New York, and Chicago will be goldmines for numerous all-star caliber players to join together, then, I fear, not that the league will drop teams, but that teams will no longer be able to fund it's players, forcing them out of existence. We will probably begin to see a league that is dominated by six teams, three in each conference. If this style of play and collaboration continues, I think, like you say, teams like Memphis, Indiana, Toronto, and Milwaukee will see an end to their franchise.

on Bears down: Chicago's true colors show

October 5th 2010 03:15
That's always tough to predict, because of other teams in the league. Here is the political answer. When the offensive line can give Eli Manning time to throw consistently and the defense can be more aggressive, they will be back in contention for a Super Bowl.

on Bears down: Chicago's true colors show

The Giants defense played phenomenal in the game on Sunday, like they did in past Super Bowl appearances. However, I do believe that we saw the true Bears offense on Sunday Night. Tom Coughlin is a very intelligent coach and if he saw something in the Bears o-line that he could exploit he did it.
The Giants are capable of playing this way against many of their opponents and I expect this win to get them on some sort of winning path.

All the money he receives from commercials, advertisements, jersey sales, shoe deals and other endorsements must be related to race too. I am absolutely positive that you could tie any situation into race, no matter what color you are. But to do so is a different story.
Like I said, If Larry Bird had left to head to Los Angeles during the 80's, he would have been put through worse things than media attacks and negative comments, that I can promise you.
If Peyton Manning decided to announce on a national broadcast that he was heading to New England to play for the Patriots, don't you think Indianapolis would burn jerseys and anything else with the name Peyton Manning on it?
LeBron, you are a professional athlete, the most adversity you have to overcome is what to spend an extra $1.2 million on....a olympic size pool or your personal beach.

on Braylon Edwards punishment a joke

September 27th 2010 17:33
I agree, the Jets organization needed to step up and bench/ suspend Edwards for an extended period of time. I think, though, that the NFL, or at least all the organizations, need to take some action and make this a detrimental punishment equipped with heavy fines and suspensions. It's getting very frustrating knowing that young children consider these guys heros and they are out doing this kind of garbage.
Not to mention how devastating the consequences could be if Edwards, or anyone else for that matter, causes an accident

on Braylon Edwards punishment a joke

September 23rd 2010 22:33
I was unaware of that rule. That makes Edwards look even more incompetent than before. I don't condone what Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress did, but it seems to me, people like Ben Roethlisberger and Braylon Edwards are more dangerous to society and pay a cheaper price for it.
Roger Goodell and the NFL officials need to meet with the Player's Union and work something out for this kind of behavior. It's getting ridiculous.
