Driving 101

Lesson One. Everything mentioned in here is true.
Driving a vehicle has become essential to living a prosperous life. SubUrban Sprawl has with no sidewalks or stores for miles have made it impossible to be a "Sub-Urbanite" pedestrian. Well, OK, not impossible but hard considering most suburbanites are over weight. If you dont believe you must have a car to make a decent living, then just ride the bus for a month or two. No, I'm not talking commuting, like getting in your car and going to the bus terminal to get to the city. I'm talking about walking to the bus stop, waiting for the bus and doing the bus to train to bus transfer thing. Yes, three hours wasted one way. So with driving so essential to "the American Way" of living then why aren't drivers trained better?
Here in Atlanta, we actually have one fatal car crash every rush hour or at least we did a couple years ago. Imagine, some poor sober driver being killed because another sober driver crashed into them. Now that's sobering. Do you know what "Right of Way" means? How about "Yield"? These two phrases, or words are the building blocks of driving. Yes! Understanding these two principles would cut accident rates in half and make the commute much easier even reduce traffic and have a smooth traffic flow instead of the slam on the brakes garbage we have now.
So, the Right of Way. You know, you cant even drive a boat without knowing what "right of way" means or how it works. As a matter of fact THE RIGHT OF WAY is driving. Put simply, right of way is which driver depending on direction of travel and intent has the right to continue and which driver must yield his/her "right" to continue driving on the course of their choosing. There are specific rules of engagement already established for decades. They are basic, common sense and they work. It's not the white man trying to dominate and squash everybody, and I'll get into that statement in Driving 101 Part 2., but these rules work and they work very well. Follow them and there will be driving harmony. Invent your own and we have discord. I think we all know from observation and experience how these rules work like if I'm heading for an intersection and my light is green, you are headed in the opposite direction to the same intersection and want to take a left you know that you must "yield" your right of way to me or we could end up in a crash. Some drivers dont care and discord ensues.
Now, "yield". Yield means to give up your right of way until some action occurs. It is a simple procedure and ensures driving safety. Yield does not mean accelerate and cut off, or in the case of an intersection, to get through before the red.
Well more on Yield in Part 2. I promise, Part 2 is going to get real good. Have a good one and safe driving.
