It is apparent to me that there would not be such a big problem if Dr. Laura used the words cracker. It would not offend most white people either. On the other hand it is obvious to me that when white people use the "N" word it is offensive to black people. OK so lets get this straight, just for the record. If a black person says the "N" word to another black person, they think it is funny, or a colloquialism. If a white person says it then it is considered offensive. I think it would be wise for black people and white people to just stop using the word, so we can all have a happy planet together.
Frankly I believe all black people would be setting a better example for their own people if they stopped using this word with each other. They only serve to bring each other down when they talk this way. Freedom of speech is merely the right to speak what you think so long as it doesn't interfere with the rights of others. Therefore using words that are offensive to you in reference to what someone said to you is an open discussion of how a person feels, and not an opportunity to use them in slight of conversation against the person you have shared your feelings with. If words are brought up in a conversation about what another person said, those words are usually repeated in a conversation when feelings are talked about. So discuss your feelings with Dr. Laura. But if you use words that offended you, and you think they might offend other people listening on the air, then why would you use the words in the first place. By saying the words first aren't you actually the one who used the offensive words in the first place. I think Dr. Laura did the right thing apologizing, she took the high road, correcting herself for unintentionally offending black people. Furthermore she is now out of a job because someone else used the "N" word first.
