First Review - Aggie Martin

July 5th 2008 03:41
I am currently on holiday visiting my wife's family. They reside in Brampton, Ontario, a suburb of Toronto in Canada. We were looking for a nice place to eat, almost fine dining. In Brampton you wont find any. All you find are fast food or chain restaurants, where you can get a club sandwich, burger, fries, and wings. But I was able to stumble upon this place in downtown Brampton. It is called Aggie Martin.

CAFÉ AGGIE MARTIN
15 MAIN STREET NORTH
BRAMPTON, ON L6X 1M8
905-450-7854
www.aggiemartin.com

This is as good as it gets in Brampton. Yes, the cost will be twice as much as Jack Astor's or East Side Mario's, but you wont be disappointed. The menu is definitely a bistro menu, french bistro menu. It contains a variety of seafood, poultry, and meats.

Pricing: $$ (in my standards) $$$ for Brampton standards, expect to spend $30-$50 per person
Decor: It has a nice quaint look and feel to the place. Very nicely decorated and warm. The music is a little loud when playing in the background. Dont expect too much privacy as the decibel levels can get pretty loud on a busy night.
Service: There are two waitresses and a bartender/manager working the front of the house. The service can be a little slow, but they are not in a hurry to turn you table over to waiting customers. There was no wait on a Friday night at 7PM. Expect a two hour meal. I didnt mind it, but if you are in a hurry and have theater tickets, make sure you let them know.
Food: The aromas in the restaurant were amazing. You can smell the butter to the sweet onions as you sit and wait for your food. Bread is offered sparingly. You will only get once piece of so-so bread. Our party of three shared a fruit and cheese platter. Skip this, it is nothing special. It looked to be a couple of slices of parmesean cheese, blue cheese, and some bree, topped with some fruit. Nothing spectacular. The portions for the main dishes were adequate, you wont be dissappointed. I had the mustard crusted rack of lamb. This was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Nice and tender, the sauce was flavorful. It came with some roasted potatoes and assorted vegatables. The asparagus was also nice and tender. The best part was the corn, it came on a small stalk. The corn was nice and sweet, just what you would want for a summer meal. They also offer a variety of wines to pair your meal with. I had a wee willy beer.

Recommendation:If you are ever in Brampton for whatever reason. Skip the Jack Astors and go to Aggie Martin. You wont be disappointed.
