Doctors who take advantage of their Patients
October 11th 2008 09:42
Is it because of money? Or because of their specialty? Or are they doing some kind of research?
Whatever the reason may be, the one who falls as a victim to these kind of people are most likely not to get out of the situation easily.
Sometimes, it comes to my mind, what are they really up to? Are they performing some kind of experiment? Or are they trying to get more information about you?
Chances are, if you are not keen to identifying who they are, i'm sorry to say that you've just signed up to be their "lab rat".
Isn't their some kind of law wherein they would have a rule against people like them? Or perhaps some kind of evaluation on the measures that they take, especially in putting the patients into tests that really doesn't help that much in making the person any better, but only add more difficulty, danger and even rob them of their own money right in front of them.
It's sad, but true. And here's one real-life scenario that had happened to somebody that I know, I call it the "CT Scan Scenario".
Both parents are working, and their baby is at home with the grandmom taking care of him. In the afternoon, the mother received a phone call from home saying that the baby is sick and has a bit of fever. So then she calls her husband to inform him about their sick baby at home.
Normally, they visit a hospital near their home and have a regular doctor who sees their baby during the weekends. But since it's a weekday, a different doctor was available for the routine duty.
After their work, they rush to meet each other and drive home. They open the gate, prepare their baby and head to the hospital. They finally arrive the hospital and head directly to the pediatrics department, the nurse does an S.O.P. (Standard Operating Procedure), measures the temperature and weighs the baby.
To their surprise, the fever already went up to 39.5 degrees celcius! Both of them froze for a few seconds as they realized that their baby was almost going to have a convulsion. They're still lucky to be able to arrive in time. So the nurse immediately went to give the baby some paracetamol syrup, in order to help lower the temperature.
Both of them were already anxious about what they had just faced.
After a few minutes, the time came for the doctor to call them in. Instead of checking the condition of the baby, in regards to the high fever and applying some other necessary aid to help him; the doctor suddenly stood up and started checking the baby's head. And then asked the nurse to get a tape measure to measure the baby's head.
Both parents were confused as to why the doctor suddenly started measuring their child's head and didn't inspect the baby for other symptoms about the possible cause of fever, like checking the mouth or the eyes.
So the mother exclaimed, "Uhm, excuse me doctor but is this related to why our baby is sick"? The doctor then said, "No, I was just checking to see the baby's head circumference, it seems to be not developing normally".
At that point on, the father already had a change of mood and already felt something strange with this check-up.
The doctor then said that the baby's development of the head wasn't normal, based on the graph for babies. The baby was over the normal range and then she sugested to get a CT Scan to see the development of the skull. And continued to talk non-sense into the mother, psyching her emotions to already feel uneasy and worried about her child. It did work, and she was already feeling emotional.
But this didn't affect the father, he already knew that this doctor was up to something. And that is, #1 Get them to do a CT Scan, so in turn the doctor gets some commission for the process; #2 Put their baby in danger, early exposure to radiation that would be coming from the X-ray machine.
Having met a lot of people in his life, and thus, giving him some experience, especially in knowing and feeling the intentions of the people, just by looking into their eyes and they way they direct their conversations; he's sure that this doctor is just trying to get something out of them.
The baby was prescribed to get only 1 medicine, a bottle of paracetamol drops. And as they were waiting for the queue in front of the cashier and pharmacy counter, the nurse approached them and said that the doctor would like to appoint with the examination by next week evening, and the scan would cost around 5,000 baht (approximately $125).
That's a lot of money in Asia, and it's not an easy money to pay.
The father then told his wife that they wouldn't go to this appointment because it's pointless. It was obvious enough that the doctor was setting a trap to bait the mother into considering to take the exam. And she fell for it!
That night, when they arrived home, the mother immediately told the other members of the family about what the doctor had said in regards to her child's condition. Perhaps to get more sympathy and advice. Most of them, of course, agreed to the examination since they were not in the scene when the doctor was trying to convince her.
It was 1 against all, the father was the only one who was against the CT-Scan. Knowing that he lost the power in deciding the best for their baby, he just kept quiet himself.
