Doctors who take advantage of their Patients (Part 2)

October 13th 2008 03:33
A continuation from Part 1 ...

After meeting with the doctor, the following day at work, the mother talked to her office mates about her baby. She told them about the scenario, and most of them suggested that they should go through with the check-up. In order to know if there really is something wrong as early as possible. Though some of them also said that the baby is fine and healthy, so why would they go through an examination like this. One of them exclaimed that maybe, that doctor was the one who suggested to buy the CT Scan machine, and since it's already near year-end, the quota for the use of the machine wasn't near the estimated usage. And this is why this specific doctor looks for victims, who would be willing parents to take the scan for their children.

On the father's side of his office, he also told the story about his baby's future x-ray examination. Most of his office mates were asking about if the CT Scan is really necessary. Since the baby is only 4 months old and isn't it dangerous to be exposed to radiation at a very early stage? A few of them said that, "well, maybe the doctor noticed that both of you looked like willing and also able to pay for the scan, that's why she setup the scenario with your wife".

Both parents had different feedbacks from the people that they know, since telling the situation was said in different ways. The mother was emotional and the father was logical.

A few days passed by, the mother got more suggestions from others to continue with the scan, even though the baby is healthy, "just to make sure".

But as for the father, one of his office mate who was also a father himself said that, "get used to it, mothers be like this, they wouldn't stop until they get a confirmation that there's nothing wrong with their child. I've been through it a lot of times and we even went to a lot of hospitals and also met a lot of doctors. You do have a choice though, go for a 2nd, 3rd or even a 4th opinion from different doctors from different hospitals, and also, try to research from the internet in regards to your case."

It was a good idea, the father thought, and so he started his research about the case. Looking through the criteria about CT Scan, he found out about it's difference from a normal x-ray exam. But still, it uses the same technology, the only difference is the CT Scan's got a better way of controlling the radiation output. He was also able to find information about the cases about the brain having too much water, and how to read ct scan results.

As he learned more about the case, he found out that 'most doctors' don't recommend having a scan unless it's an emergency case, an accident, or is really needed.

With the information that he gathered from his research, he talked to his wife again explaining what he had learned, hoping that she would understand and dismiss this case while it's still not too late.

Eventually, all his efforts were not rewarded, the wife had already made up her mind, and she said that she'll go through with the scan after a week from that appointment.

To avoid further argument, the father then said, "OK, it's up to you then, I thought that in making decisions about what's right for our child should have both of our answers. But since you replied to me this way, it seems that you're going to go through this, with or without my decision".

A week had passed, and the day for the examination arrived. Both parents worked only half-day and went home to prepare their child. They went to the hospital early in order to calm their baby, the nurse needed to give a dose of sleeping syrup to the baby.

As she poured the syrup into the baby's mouth through a syringe, the baby started to cry and agitated. The child suddenly spit out most of it, the nurse exclaimed, "it doesn't taste good?" The father said to himself, "why don't you taste it so you don't need to ask my baby?" The mother was just quiet as she looks at her crying child and tried to comfort him.

After more than an hour, the baby fell asleep and they headed for the CT Scan room. The medical specialist positioned the baby laying down, ready for the scan. Only one person was allowed to be inside the room with the protective suit. So the mother stayed with the child and the father went to the control division to watch as the scan was performed.

The examination started and the whirling sound of the machine could be heard. Then the platform moved a bit inside the machine and started scanning.

The father was able to see as the computer started to generate images of his child's brain and head scan. As each of the images were taken, he could already tell that his baby was fine, based from the experience he acquired from his research.

The final image was processed and the scan was over, the platform adjusted back to its original place and the mother prepared to take her sleeping child. The father finished viewing the scan results as the computer prepared it to be outputed to an e-film.

Both parents were relieved that the scan was finally over. Next is to wait for the doctor to arrive and view the results of the exam.

After waiting for less than an hour, the doctor arrived and they were called inside the room. The doctor explained that based from the scan, the skull isn't developing as normal as 'she thinks' and needs to do another test, take a blood sample from the baby and conduct an examination for Calcium.

The father was already thinking to himself, "another exam? aren't you already satisfied that you already robbed as in front of our eyes with the CT Scan? And now, you still want more? When's these experiments going to end?"

As they waited outside for the experienced nurse to take the blood sample for their child, the father told his wife, "so now, you see what I mean, this doctor still doesn't know when to stop. Our baby's fine, nothing's wrong with him, and obviously, she still wants to get more money from us. I pity our baby that he's so young and he has to go through a lot of unnecessary things like these, and we, his parents couldn't even help him. I feel so helpless since you don't agree with me on this. Why don't we stop now why it's still early?" His wife said, "I know that our baby's fine and healthy and that there's nothing wrong with him, but I want to make sure."

The experienced IPD nurse arrived and they went inside the room to conduct the blood extraction. The father stayed outside and waited. He could hear his baby's screams and crying out loud as they took a blood sample. It broke his heart being there and not being able to protect his child from all of this pain he's going through right now.

Finally the mother went out with her baby, tears were visible from her eyes, as they approached the father. She told her husband that the nurse had to insert the syringe into their baby's foot lots of times and pour the blood into a container and extract again, since the baby didn't have any visible veins yet. He just took a deep breath and shook his head in pity for his baby.

They waited for the results of the Calcium examination. After half an hour, the results came and they went into the doctor's room. "Based on the results, there seems to be no problem with his calcium," the doctor said. "I thought so," the father said to himself. But, his Phosphorous level in his blood is quite high, so I'd recommend you to go to this gov't. hospital and meet with this doctor. She then writes a letter, then encloses it in an envelope, and gives it to the mother. "This next step is to see if there's a problem with his Thyroid Hormone." The father shook his head again, "it's still not over," he said to himself.

They went out of the room and headed for the Cashier and Pharmacy waiting area. He told his wife, "see, I already told you that our baby's fine and healthy, there's nothing wrong with him. The scan and the Calcium test turned out to be normal. So, could you please listen to me already and let's stop this non-sense? Our baby suffered a lot already and I think that it's enough."

"I know what you mean," she said, "but I want to go through all of these and to know and confirm that our baby is really fine."

"She already robbed us a lot of money," he replied, "and found nothing, isn't that a sign for you to stop already with these experiments on our baby? Clearly, there's nothing more to see here." Then he remembered what his office mate said about mothers, and so he said, "fine, if you want to go through this, it's really up to you then, I can't stop you."

They paid for the hospital charges, then he exclaimed to himself, "professional crooks!" Then headed on their way home.
