Do you want to challenge your brain?

November 1st 2006 21:07
It must be time for me to give you some more information on the Brain.

This would be much easier to do if I could properly access and reproduce here those images from the web, but I am having trouble doing that, especially in between creating computer art, which can actually be quite time consuming.

I thought it would be interesting to start from scratch and prepare some brief articles on the history of computers and some more on how computers work.

I'm pretty vague on those things myself but don't think any courses would cover my precise needs and no course can compensate for my ineptitude.

As you seem to be hesitant to say what you do and don't want me to do, I guess I'll just do it anyway and see what I can come up with.

Today I'm going to give you three images which I had really planned for conversation in the family, so I'm robbing Peter to pay Paul, so to speak, a useful money management strategy from time to time but one which has its limitations because eventually either of those to whom money is owed will want to collect. Good for short term management only and for keeping the money in your hands rather than giving it to the bank who will quickly charge you fees for doing so.

Computer Art for the Brain
A beginner's efforts, perhaps?

Computer Art for the Brain
A little harder

Computer Art for the Brain
Brain twister - a little easier

There's plenty there to challenge your brain but not so overwhelming as other images, probably anyone can attempt something like this and it's surprising what pops out at you once you get going.

how do you create these images?

Adrienne,

I use Microsoft Paint a program that comes with accessories with all Microsoft Programs for PC users.

There are a set of "tools" meant to represent a painter's instruments.

There's a paintbrush, meant to represent an artist's brushes, with various sizes, a spray brush for spraying on paint, a paint filler which puts in the colours one has chosen, there's a pencil, circles, rectangles, straight lines, a tool that can make triangles or polygons of various sizes, these can use an outline or be 'filled' , one can cut out figures, and cut out other shapes.

These things are difficult to describe, and I had found a very nice website describing very well each 'tool' but I have been unable to locate that again. But, I'll keep trying. One can enlarge or reduce images, flip and rotate and by now it's starting to look very complicated.

For the beginning it's a matter of just opening up the program, selecting a colur and off you go.

Just do anything you can initially, the mouse guides the tools, and as the images are based very much on pixels, it's hard to produce a normal drawing.

I learnt the hard way, Microsoft gives help but it is very confusing for a beginner, it's a matter of get in and play and experiment along the way.

At first it appears to be absolutely hopeless and one wonders who on earth would want to do that.

Progressively and by not trying too much at once, one gets the hang of it.

I work with and around deficiencies and use some tricks to do what I do. But most beginners are a long way from where I am.

If you google in Microsoft paint you'll find some work that other's have done, mostly on conventional lines, I haven't seen anyone else using my approach, but many could.

If for some reason you don't have the MS program you can download it free from the net.

I hope that fills you in just a little.

Sometime when you're at a loose end, have a go. If you achieve anything at all at first, top marks to you.

When I first started my initial reaction was, "what on earth is the use of this and why would anyone do it"

Somewhere I went from there to what I do now, with many years passing by before I started again, just recently, to support some ideas I have but I find that generally the bloggers that show an interest are more interested in the art itself than any messages I try to convey.

I like experimenting, but it is very difficult to keep the flow going, and far too time consuming, but just now I have the time and like to be totally absorbed, so it is filling that need for me, plus, I hope, encouraging my neural connections to sprout and grow to maintain brain health.

Katyzzz,

I am a very slow orbler compared to you my dear and I am completely confuddled as to where I was trying to return to, in order to give my appraisal on the art, or did I do that two posts ago...? Hang on I think I did... I came back with a glass of wine, something seems familiar about that thought.... I've been to so many blogs .... Do let me know if I've missed something again, won't you...sorry.

As for today, let me see,

1. Heavy, monotonous, sad - but a ray of hope there, something to build on. I like the lime green - nice choice - it took me through a portal into the night time, cool, moonbeamy, peacful.... am I dreaming?
2. A little harder - *lol* - Crescent moons and BAts Wings - Its Halloween!
3. Easier, yes and he has hair now too...contemplative, integrating, growing....calm (still)...am I filing day-time memories away here?

Thanks for a slower pitch
C'ya tomorrow.

Lilla....

Lilla,

Thanks for the comments, it's always a delight to have you.

I've finished no. 1 of the dreamscape.

Funnily enough my brother arrived to-day and wants me to do some work on dreaming and nightmares and jokes connected with either. I'll let you know how I go.

Katyzzz,

I do love these art works that you must spend so much time doing!
I can't quite explain what I think when I look at each one (most of the time), but I love how each draws a different response.

Keep up the great work.

Thank you ,Kylie,

It's great to have you come and visit and I love your little animals, I must introduce them to my lorrikeets.

Don't worry if you can't quite explain, it will get easier with time and I don't know that any explanation is required. Just enjoy the ride, don't worry about the destination.

I can't help but feel that some of your images should be converted into flash as vectors so they can be animated. That may freek us out too much.

Damo,

That may well be a very good idea. Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea of what you are talking about.

I never set out to be a computer artist in any way shape or form. It just happened by accident when I was looking for something to do.

In this instance I started it as a means to an end and as brain exercise and a mind challenge to
encourage the sprouting of new neural connections and to try to get through to the computer illiterate, actually using a means to which they would not normally have access.

Some seem to like what I do and that is sufficient for me, at this stage.

Once again, thanks for doing the music for us at the party and your behaviour was most circumspect, always good to see.

I like to have a man's point of view and if an opportunity such as you are sugggesting comes along I'll endeavour to make use of it.

Thanks for coming to visit. I hope you'll call in again soon.

I'm not sure about your first piece.

"A Little Harder" reminds me of John Coburn, but I don't think you have taken as much time on colour as you have on format. I like the overall theme of the piece but it may have been better realised with larger shapes. For me, this piece is "a little harder" only because I think it "Could Have Been Better".

"Brain Twister" emulates Miro, in composition, flow and colour, but the upper right is pure Katyzzz. My fav.

Thank you so much for your comments LAD.

The first two were meant to be somewhat deficient to give a little encouragement to those who have actually become reasonably adept with the tools but are still struggling to go much further. From that point of view, they have value.

But it is surprising, when I discountwhat I do/have done others will get something that I have missed out on.

You are obviously knowledgable about art and artists, far in excess of where I'm coming from and your comments gave me something to think about.

It was a very polished analysis and I thank you: I am becoming more and more aware of the many talented people we have in the Orble community. It's rather nice to be so involved.

Thanks for calling by.

another cool one there Katyzzz. You are sincerely creative! I love the complexities of your puzzles. Have you ever painted these types of things for galleries... you seem very focussed-- I bet you could create some brilliant pieces of abstract art.

Manda,

Press button..... a.... button.... button a...

I thought I had a new raft of admirers there for a moment...a moment....a moment...

The same thing has happened to me before, but generally I stop at 2.

They say repetition is good, it surely worked for me here.

Thanks for your lovely comments.

I think the server was down. I tried to write an apology for my harsh comments, but couldn't - so here it is now. Sorry! I'm blaming the baby and the sleep deprivation. It's making me crazy!

I really enjoy your art Katyzzz and I'm glad you've got me thinking art again. I think you are very talented.

Manda,

Oh, no, no, no I really like that. Strip myself of points? No, no, no.

It's a bit like a standing ovation or an encore, even if it was unintentionsal, serendipity must not be overlooked.

LAD,

I didn't interpret your comments as harsh, no, I thought they were great.

But any time you want to be harsh, feel free.

I'm a big girl, now, and I can take it.

We learn from all these things and I like learning, especially in unconventional ways.

Loved it.

Manda,

No need for you to cop the flack, sometimes the computer just moves ahead of our fingers and we think we haven't done something when, in fact we have.

No-one is going to blame you.

And even if they did, there are so few visit my site that it will just disappear into cyberspace.

Don't worry LOL, it's all in the cause of good fun, and hopefully, one day some money.

They believe in looking after the cents here and the dollars ( if ever) will look after themselves.

Manda,

I don't make any, but it's the future prospects, maybe. Time will tell.

You need to get those hits up and get a domain, if you haven't got one.

Votes are important.

I hope I haven't disappointed you.

No, not disappointed at all. I just didn't really know how the whole thing worked and when I signed up it seemed as though Orble made a clear point that it was paying.... nevertheless, I am here to stay until I am no longer wanted. Thanks Katyzzz - I appreciate it.

Manda,

I agree with the point you've made.

There is the opportunity to make money, but I guess one didn't realise how far away that might be, nor the expenditure of time required.

I was after a scholarship, originally, but there's no way I could do what I do in 2 1/2 hours a week.

It wasn't much money but had it worked out and had I been able to spend just that much time it would have been OK.

I've rather forgotten about that one, and there's heaps of things on the web that actually cost you money and from what I've gathered don't deliver anything.

It's all a little disappointing really.

But, once one goes on to a commision basis here, there is an opportunity, but if it was just money people are after they'd be better off working at McDonald's or as a checkout chick or guy!

katyzzz

This just happens to serve my purpose at present, but we'll see how things go.

It's not just the writing it's everything else that goes with it, very time consuming really.

yeah, I agree. But it seems to be that Orble should explain it a little better to future writers as I can see misunderstandings occuring as a result. But, I am happy, there are so many nice people here.

yes, your posts seem very involved, I can tell a lot of work goes into what you create.
