Do you walk like you drive?

August 9th 2007 02:51
I was walking into the train station the other day with my head down, trying to stuff a jumper into my bag and trying not to attract too much attention at the fact that my bag was just SIMPLY too small to fit the jumper. After finally succeeding and tossing the huge round bag on my shoulders, i finally glanced in front of me and with my super fast reactions, stopped on the spot. This was an attention seeking moment, that i DEFINITELY did not ask for. I looked around as people gave me weird glares and some old ladies chuckled as they looked at me. My cheeks burnt up as i tried to fake a smile to hide the fact that i was about to die from embarassment. I was in the middle of the busiest station in Sydney, about to walk down the wrong side of the escalators. There was a guy coming up from the escalator towards me laughing as he stepped past me. I awkwardly turned to my right and went down the right escalator. The whole train ride home i sat there wondering why i had made a mistake like that and then i realised the answer. I walk like i drive. For some unknown reason that day, the train station had decided to swap the direction of the escalators. In Australia, we drive on the left side of the road so naturally, we tend to do everything on the left. Hence, that day, i had instinctively walked towards the left escalator without looking.

Don't you find it funny, that we actually do this every single day of our lives without even noticing. When we walk down the streets towards a crowd of people, we tend to dodge towards the left, when we walk to the escalators, we walk to the left and stand to the left. On a busy pedestrian walking, most people walk on the left to prevent people running over eachother. Imagine if we didn't do this instinctively, how messy life would be.

I just discovered orble and stumbled upon your site, and I have to say, you're so right (heehe that rhymes)! That's exactly how it is in America, but reversed. We always walk on the right; if you're walking along and another person starts walking towards you, you move over to the right to let them pass by. In crowded hallways during high school, it was basically like a pedestrian highway, everyone was herded over to their right. That's so interesting; I've never realized how ingrained and automatic our walking patterns are... and that even the way we walk is influenced by where we're from! Now I have to go to Australia and see how hard it is to switch to walking on the left...
