Do you believe in ghosts?
What is that time that we have between being awake and being asleep and how much of it should we take notice of? (I am not posting a picture on this one because personally this topic terrifies me and you can be assured tonight...I sleep with the light ON!!!)
I had a talk with my cousin last night which totally freaked me out - to the point that I am once again afraid to close my eyes and go to sleep. It has been a long time since this has plagued me...sometimes we take for granted that we can just [I]go to sleep[/I,sometimes it is easier to just stay awake - and you would be surprised how the human body copes when it is deprived!
So I was talking to my cousin and he said the other night he had a serious headache and went to bed really early. Normally when this happens he can sleep the whole night through, however this night he woke up at about 10 pm and was wide awake so watched a movie and then went and lay in bed with his iPod on. As he felt he was finally drifting off to sleep he pulled his earphones out and switched off his iPod and rolled over to go to sleep. Now he likes to sleep in complete darkness and his light switch is on the other side of the room. As he is falling asleep he starts to hear this deep grunting sound at the foot of his bed and rolls over to peer into the dark to see a short man with a long black hat and white striped cape leaping out at him. He said in his terror he jumped 'through' this being to turn on the light when it promptly disappeared.
When my uncle was small he used to wake up screaming and say there was a man pinching him in his bedroom. He would come out in bruises all over his body.
My great uncle used to hear someone bouncing a ball in the passageway - but only once they had turned the lights out. When they turned them on the bouncing would stop. His daughter spoke of a man who used to come into her bedroom wearing a white track suit. Their neighbour spoke of the previous owner who was a basket ball player, that died in the house. He used to wear a white track suit.
My aunt used to wake up with a black being lurching at her through the darkness. Her whole body would go into a spasm and she would not be able to move. She could not scream, she could not open her eyes, she was frozen still.
So I was watching a documentary on how people believe that bad energy can be passed down through generations, how if someone in your family did something atrocious many years ago, it could be passed down and haunt your family for years to come.
Do you believe in ghosts? Do you believe that the actions of past family members can haunt you today, even though you never met these people? Is it easier to not believe in these things because of your own fear? How do you get rid of this negative energy? What would you do if you were confronted by such a situation? Or can it all just be explained away by over-tiredness and that state between being fully awake and going into our dream state?

First, yes, I believe in ghosts. However, it must be said that I also believe in logical explanations where available. One thing about your post strikes me... these haunts mentioned all occurred while the "haunted" was asleep, or near sleep.
When we sleep, our bodies go into an automatic state of paralysis. This is what keeps us from acting out our dreams. Sometimes, our mind wakes partially. We open our eyes to reality, but because we're not completely 100% awake yet, our "dream" can still be playing in part. The dream overlapping reality can be extremely frightening because the dream layer can be holographic, giving the illusion of an apparition. Frozen with fear? Not necessarily. Because the mind has only partially awakened and the body hasn't caught up to it yet, the auto-paralysis is still functioning... the body can't move. Many scientists use this theory to explain away the possibility or claims of alien abductions.
There are even some forms of narcolepsy that are so severe they cause this type of thing each time the person is asleep, requiring heavy medication and adjustment of lifestyle.
I do believe there are ghosts - absolutely, but I also believe that a lot of what we attribute to "ghostly behavior" can be explained more scientifically if we look more closely at the facts and details... even like "simple" or "common ones, like electro-magnetic fields.
I do believe seeing ghosts or having paranormal "gifts" can be passed through the bloodline, but I'm not so inclined to believe that an ancestrial ghost would haunt future generations intentionally well beyond the point of "memory". I cannot be held responsible or be punished for what my great-great-great-great grandmother did in her lifetime, or in her death.
I'm all for debunking before attributing heebie-jeebies to ghosts.
Excellent topic!

However I love hearing ghost stories.
They sound so much better when spoken.

I believe that your family is what I call "psychic sensitive" No, I do not believe that some atrocious act is being "passed on" through your family, I just believe that you are sensitive to spirits and cant handle them.
People with particularly magnetic auras are just delicious to all kinds of spirits. There are spirits that have never been human, elementals, ghosts, potergiests - the lot. Ive met them all, and I pick up 'riders' or what I call 'little pissers' every where I go. They want your attention, they want a bit of your living energy. It makes them feel good. Spirits can sometimes masquerade as ghosts to get your attention, or you may just have ghosts.
Stand up to them! We moved into this house about 6 months ago, and it is INFESTED with gremlins, something Ive never dealt with, and three very dominant powerful elementals. Mums taken on the elementals - she has the most fear, so they focus on her. Being older and having the most confusion, the gremlins focus on her too. She has the gift of sight and can see them, I just feel them. So far Ive had favourite objects stolen, my coffee cup shattered and things just moved to odd places. Flat out tell them - Im not having this! Give it back, put it back, stop scaring me or rattling that window - Use an authoritive voice like talking to a child (most spirits only have a child like capacity) and throw in a good bit of charge from your aura. Get them in line, make them work for it if they want your attention so bad!
The good news is that psychic families pick up as many good spirits as pesky ones. Focus on them - you will feel the difference. The good ones can keep the bad ones in line. I have my unborn sister Cass, whos never left me, mum has her twin Jarrod, who died while they were being born, and grandad helps us both out. Youre gifted and blessed to have such strong ability in your family, dont let it go to waste!

Simple answer for me ...
I believe in spirits ... (but I've learnt on Orble to keep explanations of my opinions to my own posts ...
David ...
It's such a fascinating topic. I can't watch movies about ghosts, too spooky for me! I think ghosts or spirits are real - my mum describes them as a presence, and I guess that's the way I think of it. Part of a person who's died is still around, unable to move onto the next stage. I go with that theory anyway, but I hope I never have a ghostly experience myself.

Then again, there was a time when science wasn't willing to accept proof that the world was round, either, so maybe there's room to grow.

Your aunt's story sounds like classic sleep paralysis.

If there are things happening that are in fact paranormal and unexplainable then I'd just attribute it to Jin's or the Devil, but I'd rather not, most times they probaby are hoax's anyway

Hi Wendi,
I have had the sleep paralysis you speak of - where your body literally freezes and you cannot move, it seems like your mind is awake but your body is not. Thank goodness it was not accompanied by the terrifying beings that my aunt and cousin had with theirs.
You have raised a few interesting thoughts here that I would like to look more into - electro-magnetic fields for instance. I am only just starting to pay more attention to my dreams so am finding this a fascinating topic too...so much hidden in these that we simply dismiss as 'a dream'. And dismissing alien abductions in this way too....very interesting I never would have put the two together actually.
I find it amazing that people are not terrified by ghosts and that they actually go in search of them. I do not have such courage I`m afraid. I wonder how you would tell the difference between that dream state and actually seeing a ghost and how many times these sorts of encounters have been dismissed as dreams.
Hi Damo,
I get the shivers even thinking about ghost stories. I remember on School Camps sitting around the fire at night at the teachers telling us some chilling ones ... the one that comes to mind involved something to do with cats.....oh I get goosebumps even thinking about it.
Greetings K,
*lol* please don`t freak out???? with this topic? My friend there is nothing that scares me more! I wonder what it is that makes us so terrified.....
So what is the difference between a ghost and a spirit, if you will excuse my ignorance?
See I would prefer to just ignore them - I mean what is the current population of the world at the moment? I am sure there are millions of people out there who would gladly have these encounters. Me? Not so much hey!
Last year I lived in a haunted pub for a while and let me tell you I was terrified. I slept in my aunts room every night I was alone (she is also scared and sleeps with the light on *lol*) You can imagine the two of us.....one particular night we were talking into the wee hours of the morning about some pretty deep stuff and the next thing her bedroom door flew open. Now I know that that door was closed properly because I closed it myself. Well! We nearly wet ourselves...and then she gets up and LOCKS the door. Um hello..we are not dealing with a burglar here! Apparently there have been quite a few sightings in the pub and 5p pieces were left all over the place, keys hidden, personal items gone missing...
And now I am moving on because I`m starting to scare myself here again
Hi David,
I would be interested in hearing your beliefs in spirits here so feel free to explain away....
Evening Candice,
I cannot watch spooky movies myself, I hear you sister! I have often heard of souls getting stuck here on earth, unfinished business and everything, but what about those that have never lived? hhhmmm not sure I really want to delve any deeper actually!
Hello Bryn,
Perhaps there are too many people jumping on the band wagon of fabricating these experiences to make the small true experiences believable. Plus the fact that so many people are scared by this that they dismiss it straight away out of fear.
I think as we have progressed through the ages we have lost touch with our innate psychic abilities, that the 'facts' have taken us away from these gifts and skepticism has taken hold instead. As Wendi says there was time when we thought the world was flat....
Hi Adrian,
Thanks for the link. Yes, I have experienced this myself, just without the images that go with it. My aunt used to have these experiences frequently, sometimes even if she was just laying down. I guess that nightmares can appear to be just as real so you never know!
Greetings Ahmed,
I had never heard of jinn before so was very interested to read up on it.I find other cultures very intriguing, this was too. Thanks for the lead.
And I agree I would prefer to believe it`s all a hoax too!
Thanks again all. Interesting reading from your contributions. I guess I had better settle in to a good book, my eyes and mind are WIDE awake now and if the light is going to be on all night I may as well put it to good use

'Spirit' refers to something that has never been human or has been spiritual so long it has forgotten it was human. A ghost refers directly to something that knows it was once human, wether or not it remembers its exact incarnation or personality(most do) its all about memory.
If you choose to ignore them, you actually have to ignore them! Going on with what you are doing all the while thinking "its not there its not there" is still giving them energy. The slightest raise of heart rate, breathing rate, and they know youre scared, they know theyve got you. Its far safer to get angry - turn to the empty room, turn that fear into rage and explode with all your might - "GET THE HELL OUTTA MY ROOM!!" If youve never done it before, theyre used to taunting you, and you'll really shock them!
Get over it David. Somehow I just know that remark was for me. I'll say what I want where I want.

I have to agree with Kleonaptra on this one.
I often yell into an empty room, except I wasn't sure why I was doing it *lol* nice to know I don't need locking up, after all.
Thanks K and you Ash for such an interesting post.

PS I know some nice elementals too, who will help fight the spitefull ones...

I understand now. I think that I just have to get over the whole fear thing - I realise all of this is there I have had too many scary experiences for it all to be dismissed - fear of the unkown you know what I mean?
Hi Lilla,
*lol* I can just imagine you standing there yelling at the wall...
Wendi said it ...love the quote. I reckon I don`t need proof because if I didn`t feel it I wouldn`t be having this discussion, but it just takes a little courage to acknowledge it, accept it and stand up to it...
