Do Strikes Really Work?
April 2nd 2008 15:29
I drive for a company. Yesterday there were lots of independent truckers who shut down in the hopes of making their point about fuel prices. I dont know what good it did, if any. A strike will only work if everyone involved can go on strike. Most company drivers, like me, can't afford to shut down and risk their jobs. It seems to me that the big companies would be more interested in fuel prices than they are. If the big companies would join the independents and everybody shut down for a day, that would make a difference for sure.
Another place I always thought a strike would be a good idea was about smoking cigarets. Im a smoker and it pisses me off not to be able to light up in the places I used to be able to. I live in Nevada and we used to be allowed to smoke almost everywhere. Nonsmoking places were rare not so long ago. Now the only places you can have a cigaret are in casinos. I heard that some bars in Cal. closed down after they put the smoking ban in because there customers stopped going in. Its probably too late now, but maybe we smokers should have boycotted nonsmoking places while there was time to change their minds.
Well, theres 2 strikes I could get behind.
