Desi Boyz Has Average Opening Rockstar Good Second Week

Desi Boyz had an average opening day of around 40-45%. The film was best in Delhi NCR, East Punjab and Rajasthan. It will need to show good growth on Saturday if it is to come out with a decent weekend. The reports are mixed.

Shakal Pe Mat Ja had a poor first week of around 65 lakhs nett. Na Jaane Kabse was a total washout.

Rockstar was steady in its second week as it collected around 16 crore nett. The two week total is 63.50 crore nett and the film can get near the 70 crore nett mark.
The adventures of Tin Tin was very steady and has a two week collection of 12 crore nett in all languages

Desi Boyz Saturday Business
Desi Boyz showed no growth on Saturday as all India collections were the same as Friday with 8 crore nett. This takes the two day figure to around 16 crore nett.

The trending of the film is not great as opening was below par at mass centres and Saturday showed no growth at mass centres. The film is doing decent business at multiplexes. Sunday should be around between 9-9.50 crore nett and the weekend is likely to be around 25-25.50 crore nett which is not a very encouraging total.

A 28-29 crore nett weekend from 8 crore nett Friday would have meant a good Monday as weekend had good growth but with normal weekend growth, it will be tough to come up with a good Monday.

Desi Boyz Has Average Weekend

Desi Boyz had an average weekend of 25 crore nett approx as per early estimates. The film grossed around 8 crore nett on Friday, another 8 crore nett on Saturday and 9 crore nett on Sunday.

The film failed to pick up especially at mass centres even on Sunday business was below the mark in single screens. Multiplex business was better but even that cannot be called good.

Only Punjab, Rajasthan and Delhi had put better than average numbers, the rest of the country is average with West Bengal and Nizam being poor.

Monday will depend at what levels the multiplexes can sustain as the film has been rejected by the single screen audience. Desi Boyz also has just one open week with The Dirty Picture releasing on Friday which makes it tough to put up a decent lifetime total.

Top Opening Weekends 2011 Desi Boyz 8th

Desi Boyz had the 8th biggest weekend of 2011. The top four films all managed 30 nett plus weekends with the top two going over over 50 crore nett. The top first weekend nett grossers this year are as follows.

1. Ra.One (Hindi)
2. Bodyguard
3. Ready
4. Rockstar
5. Singham
6. Zindagi Na Milegi Daobara
7. Double Dhamaal
8. Mere Brother Ki Dulhun
9. Desi Boyz
10. Yamla Pagla Deewana
11. Murder 2
12. Delhi Belly
13. Mausam
14. Thank You
15. Rascals

Desi Boyz Drops On Monday

Desi Boyz dropped on Monday as it collected around 3.50-3.75 crore nett as per early estimates. Delhi and Punjab held up best but most other places were 50-60% down from Friday collections. Even if all India collections showed a 50% drop it would not have been so great as the weekend was below the mark.

The first week is heading for collections in the 35-36 crore nett region and it is likely the film will wrap up its lifetime business with less than 50 crore nett.

The second week is likely to take a big hit with the release of The Dirty Picture and even after that there are major releases every week so it gives very little chance to Desi Boyz to put up any worthwhile numbers from Friday onwards.

Rockstar Good First Week Ra.One Down

Shakal Pe Mat Ja had a very poor opening of 0-5% and Na Jaane Kabse was even worse. Both films have no chance at the box office.

Rockstar had good collection in week one thanks to a good weekend and holiday in parts of the country on Monday which gave it a solid Monday, the collections came down from Tuesday onwards. The film is a success and may emerge a hit depending on what happens in week two.

The adventures of Tin Tin collected an approx 7 crore nett in all languages which is an okay collection.

Ra.One (Hindi) dropped heavily in week three and has now collected 114.50 crore nett in three weeks
Rockstar Has Decent Second Weekend
Rockstar did well at multiplexes in its second weekend. The collections were around 10 crore nett. The film collected 2.50 crore nett on Friday, 3.25 crore nett on Saturday and 4.25 crore nett on Sunday. This takes the ten total of Rockstar to 57.50 crore nett approx.

The best business for the film has come in the Delhi/NCR area especially Delhi city and Gurgaon. The film has performed below the mark in East India and Nizam. The second week should manage around 15 crore nett business.

Desi Boyz will release on Friday so 70 crore nett looks the top end of its range for lifetime business.

Rockstar Has A Fall On Tuesday

Rockstar collections had a noticeable fall on Tuesday as the film collected around 4.25-4.50 crore nett from the 5.75 crore nett on Monday. The fall from Monday is 25% approx. The film has collected a good 43.25 crore nett approx in five days but on Tuesday collections at multiplexes fell as well as the single screens.

The week will end around the 50 crore nett but it will be the second weekend business of the film that will decide if it is a hit or not. On Tuesday even the stronger circuits like East Punjab and Delhi saw 20% plus falls while CPCI Rajasthan had even bigger falls. Gujarat is also on a downward trend.

The film is sustaining best at high end multiplex chains like PVR and Inox and these type of multiplex films normally see a big jump on second Saturday and that is likely to be the case with Rockstar as well.

In the Overseas market:

Rockstar Below The Mark Ra.One In Top Five Of All Time

Rockstar was below the mark in overseas as it collected around $1.65 million from all overseas markets. Last year Anjaana Anjaani opened to around $1.6 million and Rockstar is a much bigger film. The figures from major markets for the weekend are as follows.

United Kingdom -£185,000

North America - $612,000

UAE - $370,000

Australia - $100,000

Ra.One has collected $8.6 million till date and will be released in a few other markets soon. The collections are huge if we look at the Hindi film market but not so great considering Shahrukh Khan's clout in overseas. It is already the fifth highest grossing film in the overseas market and the Shahrukh dominance in Overseas can be seen by the fact that he has the four of the top five grossers and seven out of the top ten grossers.

The only non Shahrukh Khan starrers in the top ten grossers overseas are Three Idiots, Dhoom 2 and Bodyguard.

Rockstar Drops In Second Weekend
Rockstar dropped in overseas as it collected around $2.45 million from all overseas markets in ten days. The final business will be on the lines of Bachna Ae Haseeno and Anjaana Anjaani which did $2.75 million and $2.65 million respectively. The figures from major markets till date are as follows.

United Kingdom - £320,000

North America - $910,000

UAE - $550,000

Australia - $180,000

Special questions asked to trade analyst:

Are Salman Khan Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan As Big As Shahrukh Khan In Overseas Today?

Q. Which are the films over the next months which have a chance to hit the 100 crore nett mark?
A. Don 2, Agneepath and Housefull 2.

Q. Desi Boyz has good promotion and created a big buzz over last two weeks do you think it can take a 35 crore opening weekend?
A. On the ground level with exhibitors and distributors it is not too hot so it may have a buzz but there is not much actual enquiries from the public so a 35 crore opening looks near impossible task. A 25 crore nett weekend is probably more realistic number for the weekend. If word of mouth is good then a bit higher but 35 crore nett is very unlikely.

Q. What has been the response to the promos of Players?
A. Average response

Q. Shahrukh Khan has been undisputed number one in overseas for decades but don't you think he has been caught by the others like Salman Khan, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan today ?
A. If some markets others are closer but its like one guy is giving SRK a run for his money in one market, in another he is number 4 or 5. Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan are close today in North America but well behind in UK. Salman Khan is close in UAE and Pakistan but well short in North America. Shahrukh Khan is the only actor strong across all overseas markets as well as a following in places like Germany, France and Poland where other star films don't release.

Where Does Ra.One Stand For Worldwide Lifetime Business?

Q. Where does Ra.One stand for Worldwide lifetime business?
A. In fourth place after Three Idiots, Bodyguard and Dabangg. May emerge number three after its second phase release in the Overseas market.

Q. Was the average opening of Desi Boyz due to the fact that Akshay Kumar films have not been doing that well over the past two years?
A. Its more to do with content as the film did not look like an entertainer from the promos and it never had a big hit song and then when released most of the audience did not like it much. If these things were due to past poor/average films of established stars then their next films will never take an opening and without opening today no film featuring a big star can be a major hit.

Q. Why is that films like Ra.One and Rockstar are not liked by many but still have very good numbers?
A. This liked thing is dependent on a lot of factors like age, social class, etc but Rockstar was liked by youth in the big metros while Ra.One had the star power of Shahrukh Khan and a favourable release date so even with it film just being liked by under 15's in metros who form a very small segment of the paying audience the film still managed to put up a big number.

Q. Will The Dirty Picture take a big start and can it beat Delhi Belly which was similar sort of film?
A. It should open well with Mumbai circuit being very strong. It has good chance to beat Delhi Belly opening as long as content is accepted.
