Olyroos Olympic campaign over

August 13th 2008 21:10
AUSTRALIA’S Olympic football campaign is over following a 1-0 defeat to Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) on Wednesday night.

But it took the Africans 80 minutes to break the deadlock after the Olyroos’ defence withstood a series of marauding attacks by a side oozing athleticism and pace. Chelsea ace Salomon Kalou sent the African supporters into a frenzy when he capitalised on a superb pass from Gervinho, drilling a rasping shot into the top right-hand corner of the net.

The victory saw Cote D’Ivoire finish second in Group A behind gold-medal favourites Argentina, with the top two in each pool progressing to the quarter-finals.

Olyroos coach Graham Arnold made four changes to the starting line-up that lost 1-0 to defending champions Argentina on Sunday.

Striker Archie Thompson missed the game through a foot injury; with Mark Bridge and Nikita Rukavytsya leading the attack; while reserve Matt Simon was drafted into the squad as cover. Ruben Zadkovich was also ruled out of the match because of a groin strain. Defender Trent McClenahan and midfielder Kristian Sarkies replaced midfield duo Neil Kilkenny and James Troisi.

Australia’s best opportunities to score came either side of halftime. Rukavytsya forced an acrobatic save by Vincent Angban just shy of the break; while early in the second half Angban kept out a powerful free kick by Sarkies.

Kalou failed to break the stalemate when he shot over the bar twice in as many minutes, while Simon came on for Rukavytsya in the 73rd minute and had a shot stopped by Angban.

The loss was disappointing for Australian football but the team’s defensive effort was again superb. Arnold’s men conceded just three goals in three matches, a sterling effort superior to both Argentina and Cote D’Ivoire. But in the end an inability to score goals proved to be the difference and ultimately the Australians’ undoing.

Seven Bulldogs on World Cup duty

August 13th 2008 10:27
THE BULLDOGS may be languishing in the NRL never-never but seven players from the Belmore club have been selected for World Cup duty.

Lee Te Maari and Ben Roberts have been named in the New Zealand squad; Tonga has selected John Kite, Andrew Emelio and Willie Tonga; while Matt Utai and Reni Maitua will represent Samoa, a welcome respite from one of the Dogs' worst season's on record.

The Tongan and Samoan connection will forget Bulldog loyalties when on 31 October the two Pacific island nations clash at Penrith’s CUA Stadium. In what is sure to be a combustible confrontation, both camps are looking forward to a match that should decide who finishes on top of Pool 3, with Ireland likely to finish a distant third. But just as important for the victor will be island bragging rights until the next World Cup in 2012.

Samoa and Tonga are the “new boys” on the rugby league block with club competitions not officially established in the island nations until the mid-1980s.

Samoa today boasts a 12-team league while Tonga’s club competition this year celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Rugby union remains the No.1 rugby code in the islands but development of Samoan and Tongan league players in Australia and New Zealand has successfully produced many world class footballers.

The 2008 World Cup will showcase such talent.

Carle scores in Palace victory

August 12th 2008 23:34
SOCCEROO and former A-League champion Nicky Carle scored a 45th minute equaliser for new club Crystal Palace in the club's 2-1 Carling Cup victory against Hereford United.

Carle, who made his Championship debut for the Eagles in the weekend’s nil-all draw against London rivals Watford, was instrumental in his side’s triumph.

Newcomer John Oster, who this week joined the club from Reading on a five month loan deal, scored the winner, a fortuitous 48th minute strike that floated over Hereford keeper Darren Randolph.

Hereford took the lead four minutes before the interval when Moses Ashikodi thumped a powerful header beyond Darryl Flahavan. But Carle struck in first half injury time with a 20-yard screamer that rocketed beneath Randolph’s body.

Palace manager Neil Warnock was furious with his side’s first half performance and gave the players a severe bollocking at halftime.

But despite the below par performance the Eagles lived to fight another day and as Warnock admitted, “lots of good sides have gone out tonight so it was all about the result”.

Palace travels to Preston North End for Championship duty this weekend and with a friendly international against South Africa on the horizon, Carle will be hoping to continue his good form.

Australia coach Pim Verbeek has selected Carle in an 18-man squad to face the Africans at Queens Park Rangers’ Loftus Road ground next Tuesday. The Socceroos then face the Netherlands in Eindhoven on 6 September and will three days later tackle Uzbekistan in Tashkent in a 2010 World Cup qualifier.

On current form the midfield dynamo deserves a run in the green and gold.

Olyroos dream still alive

August 12th 2008 10:10
AUSTRALIA is just 90 minutes away from achieving a dream place in the last eight of the Olympic football tournament when they face Cote D’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in Tianjin on Wednesday night.

Coach Graham Arnold’s target of three-wins-from three matches has fallen by the wayside, but if his side can tame the Africans, a berth in the quarter-finals beckons

WHEN WALLABY Timana Tahu stepped onto Sydney’s ANZ Stadium to face the All Blacks in July, he not only became Australia’s latest dual rugby union-rugby league international, he also became the ninth player of indigenous heritage to wear the Wallaby Gold.

While the 27-year-old’s late father Tom was a Maori from New Zealand’s Waikato region, Tahu’s mother is Aboriginal and he spent much of his youth growing up in an Aboriginal youth hostel in Newcastle, just north of Sydney
