[def-uh-nish-uhns] from the funny farm
November 12th 2006 19:00
I've had a couple of kind people ask me specifically what the hell I'm talking about, because I'd been remiss for not stating the meaning behind the clinical (well, for me) words and phrases and acronyms that I use. That just shows me what a dimwit I am with my presumptions.
So, while I bonk myself on the head a bit, here's some useful explanations courtesy Dictionary.com. I'll use the ones that seem most accurate regarding my situation. Sit back and pretend HAL is reading along to you. But don't be afraid, in cyberspace, the entire world can hear you scream. My amusing comments will follow in purple like Grape Ape. Farm? Get it?!
Agoraphobia [ag-er-uh-foh-bee-uh]:
Abnormal fear of being helpless in a situation from which escape may be difficult or embarrassing that is characterized initially often by panic or anticipatory anxiety and finally by avoidance of open or public places
How could anyone not adore a definition that includes initially often? That's just so zen, dude.
Depression [di-presh-uhn]:
1. the act of depressing.
2. the state of being depressed.
3. a depressed or sunken place or part; an area lower than the surrounding surface.
4. sadness; gloom; dejection.
5. Psychiatry. a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal; sadness greater and more prolonged than that warranted by any objective reason. Compare clinical depression.
9. Pathology. a low state of vital powers or functional activity.
Yes, I realize that I'm Captain Obvious for including one that the whole universe knows, but indulge me and my OCD. Which brings next brings us to....
In two parts;
Obsessive [uhb-ses-iv] and Compulsive [kuhm-puhl-siv]:
OCD is a neurological disorder defined by recurrent, unwelcome thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) that OCD sufferers feel driven to perform. People with OCD know their obsessions and compulsions are irrational and excessive, yet they have little or no control over them.
That bit above was snagged from the OCD Foundation and there's lots of other good stuff to be found. But be warned, it looks like a decent amount is in PDA format, if that matters. Finally, I'm positive we've all got the meant of disorder down, don't we? If not, simply yell and I'll torture, I mean, get it for you.
Suicidal Ideation [ahy-dee-ey-shuhn]:
The process of forming ideas or images.
The rest is self ( ::: sticks tongue out ::: ) - explanatory, especially where it pertains to bumping one's self off.
bipolar [bahy-poh-ler]:
Of or relating to a major affective disorder that is characterized by episodes of mania and depression.
Which can lead to....
Mania [mey-nee-uh, meyn-yuh]:
1. An excessively intense enthusiasm, interest, or desire; a craze: a mania for neatness.
2. Psychiatry. A manifestation of bipolar disorder, characterized by profuse and rapidly changing ideas, exaggerated sexuality, gaiety, or irritability, and decreased sleep.
3. Violent abnormal behavior. See Synonyms at insanity.
Some more alternatives deemed similar, but not quite exactly the same.
4. An exaggerated desire or enthusiasm for.
5. A manifestation of bipolar disorder characterized by profuse and rapidly changing ideas, exaggerated gaiety, and excessive physical activity.
6. An abnormal compulsion or an extreme love for: pyromania.
7. Excitement of psychotic proportions manifested by mental and physical hyperactivity, disorganization of behavior, and elevation of mood; specifically : the manic phase of bipolar disorder.
8. An irrational but irresistible motive for a belief or action [syn: passion, cacoethes] 2: a mood disorder; an affective disorder in which the victim tends to respond excessively and sometimes violently [syn: manic disorder].
And one more that I forgot in my 'anxious state' to get this done.
Anxiety [ang-zahy-i-tee]:
1. Distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune: He felt anxiety about the possible loss of his job.
3. Psychiatry. a state of apprehension and psychic tension occurring in some forms of mental disorder.
Wrap the above in with panic too and you'll have a classic attack. So that's it for today class. I'm sure that covers everything (in my arsenal anyway) ad naseum. Don't forget your galoshes and eat your figgy pudding. Take a nap, you know, for those who don't have insomnia [in-som-nee-uh]And smile, for the sun will come out tomorrow. You can better your bottom dollar.
Peaces,
~Kemi
