A quarter of the population of Baghdad has been killed?

October 12th 2006 10:41
Iraq
Ordinary people in death

Since the United States led invasion of Iraq it has been suggested that more people have been killed in Iraq than at any time in its history. The population of Baghdad was 5 million souls. Throughout Iraq as many as 700,000 people have died after the invasion and the fall of Saddam Hussein, far more than died as a result of his regime.

The claims are not frivolous and emanate from the John Hopkins University published in the prestigious British medical journal the Lancet. This number is distributed over the country of Iraq so it is correct to say that it represents ¼ of the population of Baghdad but spread over the country. In Australian terms, translated from the population of Iraq to Australia it would be as if the entire population of Brisbane was killed or twice the population of Adelaide, in a war. In population terms we are talking about a new Cambodia, a new Rwanda a new Holocaust.

We were promised after the slaughter of Yugoslavia and Rwanda and Cambodia and Somalia and so many other places that all of this would not happen again. As we speak it continues unabated. So far no one in Orble has been speaking about it. Perhaps this shows how much we are aware of it. Australia is participating in no small way and it is as a result of actions on the part of our Government that this is happening. This does not mean that we are necessarily to blame. Perhaps the nations that began this internecine nightmare did not anticipate it. In which case they have not been reading and learning the lessons of history.

I saw the report come in but had few misgivings about the way the data was collected. It was not that I doubted the honesty of the people running the survey but 700,000 was well over a previous estimate of 100,000. Then again we have the official Bush number of 30,000.

The only real way to get the number of dead is to do count of the populatio before the invasion and a count after. Reduce the number who are believed to have left Iraq and you may have the answer.

Unfortunately when it comes to war ten wise men cannot argue with a fool.

Well written Spain.

You might find that the figure is somewhat in the middle of the two estimates. Is it 'irony' when more of a country's population is killed due to the actions (direct or otherwise) of a "liberating" army than under a mass murdering dictator?

You are so right about all of this and it needs an intelligent response. War and its attendant slaughter makes dispassionate analysis almost impossible. Over all of the years that people have been dying accurate statistics have become meaningless in that country.

Let me tell you a story from personal experience. “After the first gulf war it became impossible to determine how many Iraqi soldiers had been killed because the bureaucracy that keeps statistics was either corrupted or dead. In the occupied area in the South a battalion of Iraqi soldiers had been captured and had to be retained on site until the British Brigadier who was in charge of them had decided what to do with them. On coming back in the evening we could not find them and asked what had happened to them. The Brigadier told us that they had been buried by his tank battalion. In astonishment we said, “But they weren’t dead.” To which he replied, “They are now.”
We do not know the statistics, that’s true but one thing is for sure, what ever GW Bush is prepared to admit to, it is many orders greater again
