Mark Richardson is a renowned health practitioner and an expert on allergies. He answers the following ten questions about air purifiers.

Which is the best technology in an air purifier that helps in relieving allergies?
This will depend on the type of allergy the person has. But it is advisable to go for HEPA (High Efficiency Particle Arresting) technology as it is proven to remove 99.97% of particles present in the air, as it has the capacity to capture particles which measures as small as 0.3 microns.

What about allergies caused by Mildew and Mold?
HEPA filters will remove spores from the air but will not kill them. To kill the mildew and mold present in your house you need to opt for purifiers having Tio2 and UV technologies.

What about allergies caused by pet dander?
HEPA filter again is the best and you can have a pre-filter installed that will capture dust and hair so that your HEPA lasts longer.

What about allergies caused by dust?
The same answer as the last.

How would you rate Oreck air purifiers?
Oreck uses electrostatic technology to capture pollutants that are air borne. Many allergens are without a charge and hence will not be captured by this technology. The absence of a HEPA filter in this purifier reduces its effectiveness.

How often should a HEPA filter be replaced?
A good quality HEPA filter having 0-size should last an average of nine to twelve months under normal conditions. People should be careful not to over spend on these filter replacements as some companies put a hefty price tag on the replacement filters once you have bought the air purifier from them. A replacement filter of a good size should not cost you more than $40.

How long will the purifier take to clear the air?
If you have installed one with the right technology your purifier should clear the air in several hours. Mildew and mold should be removed in about seven hours.

What would be a reasonable price of a good air purifier?
Do not spend more than $300 for a unit which uses multiple technologies and is effective for the bedroom or living room.

Is the machine required to run all the time?
To save on electricity go for machines which have a dust and allergen sensor. This will automatically adjust the machine's running time.

Can you recommend a machine?
Go for models which use allergen sensors and have about nine technologies that include HEPA, Tio2, UV, Electrostatic and Carbon.

Quality of Indoor Air and Allergies

August 3rd 2010 02:37
It is a general misconception that the quality of indoor air is much better than outdoors and being inside the house is safe for people suffering from allergies. Many people assume the quality of indoor air is pure and nothing can be further from the truth. Many health experts have scientifically proved that indoor air has much more pollutants and allergy causing particles than the outdoor air.

The pollutants in the indoor air can be divided into four categories which are smoke, biological, chemical and particles. These are known to give rise to various health problems and a host of allergies.

Smoke in any form is injurious to health and its inhalation should be avoided at all costs. Smoke is usually present in the air if someone is smoking a cigarette, fumes from car exhausts, and chimneys of factories and so on. The smoke might also contain certain chemical fumes which are very injurious to health. The only way to safeguard you from smoke is to install a good air purifier which has carbon or Heap filters.

The particle category consists of dust, dander and pollen. These are very common in air and remain invisible to the eyes. These are very harmful and will cause different allergies and harm the respiratory system causing diseases like asthma.

The biological category will include spores of fungi and all the different germs like virus and bacteria. Fungi spores can greatly aggravate asthma and also cause different types of allergies. They are more prevalent in places which remain damp and have high humidity. The spores are very small and can travel in the air for quite a good distance. The best way to eradicate them from your indoor air is to install purifiers having a UV effect.

Regularly vacuuming your house and installing a good air purifier will ensure a much better quality of air indoors.

A person who has allergies will only know the discomfort and misery which he has to suffer. Many sufferers have to stay indoors to avoid the spells of asthma or frequent sneezing. The main culprits in this form of allergy are the dust and pollen present in the air. Air purifiers have proven to improve the quality of life of people having this problem but any purifier is not suitable for removing pollen from the air. Let us see the models which have proved to be a failure and the ones which are excellent.

A machine which generates negative ions also called an Ionizer, is able to take care of odor, mildew and certain pollutants but fails miserably when it comes to removing pollen. Another popular purifier is the Ozone generator which is quite effective in clearing odors, mildew and mold but the heavy Ozone starts to cause irritation in the lungs and is not at all good for people suffering from Asthma. Also it does nothing to remove pollen and dust.

Some people use electrostatic plates to reduce pollution indoors. These machines are good in capturing carbon particles which are pollutants from exhausts of cars, but again does not capture dust or pollens. The Zeolite or Carbon purifiers have proved to be good purifiers for chemical fumes and smoke but cannot trap pollen.

The only air purifier which is proven to trap and collect dust and pollen from the air is the one which uses a HEPA filter. The only disadvantage of this filter is the cost, as you need to replace the filters every year. You could be looking to spend around $300 annually if you choose the brands which are reasonably priced. You can also opt for air purifiers that use a combination of the technologies stated above. These would be a much better choice as apart from pollen and dust they also take care of mildew, mold, carbon and chemical fumes which are known to cause havoc with the immune system.

A vacuum cleaner fitted with a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is the perfect option for people who are suffering from allergies. A normal vacuum cleaner sucks up the dirt just as well but due to a lesser filtering system releases smaller particles back into the air. HEPA filter has been proven to capture particles as small as 0.3 microns in size, whereas the usual filter in a vacuum cleaner will only capture 30 micron sized particles.

You might ask why we need to capture such small sized particles. Well, firstly most of the particles found in the air are about 2.4 microns is size. Secondly the smaller sized particles are known to cause the most damage in a person suffering from allergies. The HEPA filter is made of glass embedded in paper filter. These filters will not let allergens like dust, dander, mold, dust mites, mildew, spores and flakes of skin escape back into the air after the vacuum has sucked them up

The symptoms of different allergies cause a lot of discomfort and decrease the quality of life. Allergy sufferers are all the time looking for a solution which will keep their symptoms in check and many are turning towards air purifiers.

The hunt for the right air purifier can get a bit confusing as there are so many different types available in various sizes. If you do an online search you will have pages upon pages of different types of these machines and you do not know where to begin. Well, the first thing you can do is make a note of the different types that are available and their prices. Each model will have a brief description of what it can do and its dimensions
