Deal with your panic on a plane

March 17th 2008 01:22
So not everyone is going to be a member of the ‘Mile High Club’ however, this should not deter you from experiencing the safest mode of transportation being, the airplane. Statistically, most planes which leave one city anywhere in the world at any one time always kiss the ground and land in another city.
How do you deal with a tight environment?
What about the dreaded take off and landing which causes your ears to undoubtedly pop and your stomach to drop as quick as the “giant drop”?
We can’t forget those with a fear of heights or who just do not like being enclosed in such small spaces surrounded by random people... Well...do not fear – there are solutions...

Dealing with small areas and feeling like you have been crammed in like cattle may not be the most appealing image in your head when your ticket states economy class but it is not that bad. Think about it for a second....why not take this opportunity to increase your networking skills. Have a chat with your neighbor to take your mind off the journey and you may even discover you are somehow related – it’s called the 6 degrees of separation. An easy escape, should conversation be lacking would be to get up and take a walk around the plane for a period of time. Requesting an aisle seat at check-in allows you to stretch out your legs and it would also be advantageous being seated in this pole position as you would avoid climbing over strangers when you need to make a quick escape. The other option is; if you don’t like flying being seated so close to others, earn some cash and go business (despite this not being very cost efficient). Do not panic if you are feeling tense before the journey as surely there is one little person crying in the corner for fear of flying. The easier you can get out of your seat the more relaxed you will feel after a nice big stretch!

Bring a hanky drenched in the scent of eucalyptus…What will this solve you ask? Well, apart from chewing gum as fast as you can and opening your mouth as wide as is humanely possible for take-off and landing you should also discretely sniff your hanky with a refreshing eucalyptus scent. It smells great and ensures all the connections between your nose, ears and mouth are wide open so you can breathe easy and not worry about your ears popping. This way, once you get off the plane you will not feel you have lost the vital sense of hearing. Meanwhile, do not panic if you get off the plane and seem to not hear a thing. Easy solutions include either to learn to lip-read (despite it being challenging it may assist you one day) or simply wait a few hours and you will be as good as new.

So you are panicking about the whole flying over water issue...well again, easily solved. You either do not fly at all, but we are not in the Stone Ages…….or simply do not look down! Ensure you have an aisle seat and gracefully give up your window seat to another passenger and you will be eternally thanked. Another solution is bringing a nice fuzzy pair of eye covers with the lovely elastic that secures around your head. You could imagine you are on a deserted island and people are bringing you ‘pina coladas’-I could go for that! This way you can’t see all the people around or the ground....not scary anymore...is it! Imagination is the key

I love taking planes... the takeoff, the landing.. I even like when it's dark and there's turbulence...

I get motion sick so I'm not a fan of the turbulence at all. On the whole though I don't mind long plane flights -- at the very least it's enforced downtime!

I hate planes... I don't think I could go in one ever again. I did it once, but that will not happen again. It started shaking in the air.
