Banana Republic - notes from a born again Queenslander

A revised perspective of Australians and politics after moving from Victoria to Queensland

Deadllock due to Disenchantment with Labor more than other preference

August 24th 2010 21:36
Many Australians voting last week tipped Labor to just scrape over the line. However, it seems that those who thought Labor had it in the bag were traditional loyalists. The result of a hung parliament with the winning party to form government by wooing Independents and Green MP Adam Bandt was a direct reaction appalling campaigns on key issues by both parties.

Why some Australians voted Liberal:
Perception that the Liberal party manage the economy better was a popular reason some voters cited. Chris, a Sports Manager said he voted Liberal as he is ‘hoping the Libs can get the country back on firm economic track.’ He conceded that Tony Abbott ‘might get done at the finishing post.’

Others were motivated by dissatisfaction with Labor, particularly at State level for NSW and Qld residents. Hugh Goold, a cancer researcher said, “What do people get when they vote Labor? Unionism and secret decisions.’

He complained that Labor had taken his safe Newcastle electorate for granted. He also disagrees with Labor’s internet censorship plan.

Although dissatisfaction with Labor was high, many left leaning folk dislike the Liberals more, resulting in a higher Greens vote than ever. Backpacker Josh proudly proclaimed, “I voted Green.” He thought the Australian Liberal party are mean in comparison to the British Conservative party. “What are they going to do about health, the economy and children?”

A Green how-to-vote flyer giver said he couldn’t vote Liberal as leader Tony Abbott had a problem with his same sex relationship. He said he and his partner had travelled to New Zealand for a civil partnership ceremony.

Jason Groves, President of the Liberal Party branch in London disagreed that the Liberals lost more than a handful of votes for ruling out a formal ceremony for homosexual relationships, adding that many Liberal party voters and members were gay. “I’ve known Tony Abbott since the mid 90s and he knows I’m gay and has never had a problem with it.”

He cited the Sydney seat of Wentworth as an example of a high gay population but also a safe Liberal seat. Many of the electorate have a high respect for its sitting member, Malcolm Turnbull, he insisted.

Mr Turnbull’s article on Monday in the UK’s Independent claimed Labor’s dismal performance was less due to State issues or Labor being sidelined into debates on same sex married. He said Labor had sold out when Kevin Rudd backed down on the ETS and leaders who stood for things stayed in power.

Regardless, with increased donkey vote, it was clear that neither party provided a clear policy on the basics of where they are going to take us in the future.
